Gestational Diabetes Support Thread

Since there’s quite a few of us dealing with GD, I thought it might help us to have our own support group to just talk, vent, and provide support for each other

Re: Gestational Diabetes Support Thread

  • I was feeling overwhelmed the first few days of getting the official diagnosis, but now I’m feeling better. I got my test kit yesterday and have my nutrition class tomorrow. I found a few Instagram accounts that are helpful for tips, tricks and recipes. Anyone else have anything they have found to be helpful!?

  • Glad you are feeling better! Would love those instagram accounts if you don’t mind sharing! I’ve found that my body does not process carbs as readily as the day goes on. I’ve been trying to load up on my carbs upfront (breakfast, AM snack), then moderately at lunch, and lower at dinner. I also do have some carbs at my bedtime snack but try to balance out with a fat and protein. So far my readings have been in range so I’m feeling fortunate about that. Oddly (or maybe not so oddly) I’ve been feeling more energized overall and my health indicators on my fitness watch have all been trending better since I’ve been watching my diet
  • just saw the results were posted for my 1hr test & i failed it with a 168 (normal range 90-130) 😕

I failed my 1 hour with a 237. They pretty much told me those numbers indicate I have GD but I’m taking the 3 hour tomorrow to see my fasting numbers compared, so specifically praying I AM able to manage it with diet and no insulin needed.

I’m really bummed because I’ve tried so hard to be healthy this pregnancy. I don’t eat a lot of sugar, I only drink water, I keep fresh produce to snack on and things like chia seed pudding and dates. My OB office explained there isn’t a thing you can do, if the baby is taking your insulin then we all we can do is manage it and see what I can change diet wise to help out.
  • Good luck with your 3 hour tests!

@theneno1012 - I’m glad you have been feeling good and getting good readings! Here are a few accounts I found that seem to give some good tips!

After my 3 hour I was sent to L&D. My sugar shot to over 400. I’ll be coming home with insulin to take 3x a day.

I half expected to fail and maybe need insulin at night, but I didn’t expect all this. My sugar has been holding at 250 and they just pushed a second round of insulin to see if it’ll drop before I can leave.

This is just crazy! Fasting my sugar is holding at nearly 140. I don’t understand why it’s SO HIGH
  • Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that @sph97 I hope you continue to stabilize. Hopefully your dr office can help figure out what’s going on. Sending you positive vibes! Let us know if we can help at all!
  • hang in there @sph97, hopefully they find the right dosage to help you stabilize! i pray you & baby are doing fine through all of this uncertainty.
  • @sph97 I’m so sorry all this is happening to you and baby. We are here for you and I hope they are able to stabilize things quickly so you can go home
  • @sph97 I'm so sorry! That sounds stressful! I hope your blood sugar stabilizes with the insulin.  Hugs.

Thank you all! Today was a wild ride.
I’ll actually have 4 insulin shots a day, 2 long acting and 2 fast acting.
My doctor said it’s not as common, but it does happen that the placenta just takes too much and there isn’t enough for me to stabilize my own sugar, which is why it’s so high even when fasting. I don’t have enough, or I’m not making enough insulin to regulate my own sugars at allllll.
I’m thankful they caught it today before something happened, but I’m definitely overwhelmed at how much I have to change! I will be insulin dependent until baby is here. They won’t let me go over 37 weeks, I’m considered high risk for GD and preterm labor now. They want me to change my diet to as low sugar/carb as I can to try to help baby stay at a healthy size since I’m already measuring a couple weeks ahead- I’ll have another scan next week to measure baby and see how growth is trending.
Apparently very small amounts of sugar effect me like I’ve had “too much” and I need to be careful, hopefully once we get a good insulin regimen down I can enjoy an occasional ice cream treat.
  • @sph97 - I’m so glad they caught it and you are doing better! How scary! Glad you and your doctors will be keeping an eye on your little one!
  • Well I went for an oil change today that turned into an oil change and brake pads/rotors and a few new sensors, so needless to say I was starving when I left. My sugars have been great so I stopped at Wendy’s and wow did that mess up my sugars. I guess it’s good to know, so I don’t eat fast food anymore but I just wasn’t expecting such a jump since I’ve been so well controlled. Ugh.
  • @theneno1012 when i had GD last year i would eat the occasional burger but i realized my numbers wouldn’t spike if i had whataburger burgers, my doctor would tell me “just eat whataburger everyday & you should be fine” 🤦‍♀️😂 he then explained how they don’t use mayo or ketchup in their burgers, only mustard, so it didn’t cause spikes. of course i wouldn’t eat it with fries or soda, just the burger with a bottled water. if i would get a burger from anywhere else i would just order it without mayo and ketchup. i would also ask it with extra veggies - skip the fries, and i would get good numbers. you might still be able to enjoy the occasional burger, as long as its modified a bit 😊
  • I knew I should have just done the burger. I think fries are out for me from now until the moment I deliver when I will make my husband get me the largest order of fries he can find

My fasting was 73 this morning and I was feeling dizzy and shaky so my husband told me to eat a bowl of cereal and I sipped some pineapple juice with raspberry leaf tea (not even a full cup)

Now my sugar is 293. That’s after I took my 27 units of N and 13 units of R.

My OB said the cereal was a bad idea, but I felt so BAD! I was literally shaking this morning and my husband helped me draw up my insulin, but he was worried taking insulin with it being low (lowest it’s been ever) I would bottom out.

Can someone with more experience with insulin & GD talk me through what to do when it gets “too low” that won’t super spike my sugar immediately after? I didn’t pig out, it was a small bowl of mini wheats but they were frosted so we though that bit of sugar would help raise it so I was feeling better in time for work but it was just too much. It honestly wasn’t a lot at all! Not a normal portion size I would consume because I was worried about the sugar.

@theneno1012 I wouldn’t have thought twice to eat my burger with fries! I guess the fries being so starchy would spike sugar. I also wouldn’t have considered the mayo or mustard either!

We are going to the river this weekend and I’m going to try to lettuce wrap a burger so I can eat a couple fries. I also love french fries!

Last night I ate icecream (about 1/2 cup) with a tbl spoon of natural PB and it didn’t spike my sugar! I read the PB hack on another forum, and it worked! I also ate it immediately behind a high protein dinner (grilled porkchop and greens) so I’m sure that helped too.
  • @sph97 - this is my first time having GD but I have been a diabetes educator for T1 and T2 DM for many years. Obviously, GD has its differences, but when your sugar is low the best thing to do is consume 15grams of a simple carb (a few hard candies, orange juice, soda) just count out what is 15grams - then wait 15 minutes and retest. Once it comes back up a little resume normal eating and insulin. I know the shaky feeling is so scary so there is tendency to over correct. Also because your sugars have been high you may feel lousy at sugar levels that are not true lows (not <70) but it will level out for you.
  • Also not sure what they told you about timing your R insulin but aim for 30 minutes before you eat so the peak of the insulin matches up with the peak of your glucose
  • @sph97 my GD wasn’t insulin controlled, so i don’t have any advice on that .. but cereals always made my numbers spike! it was with any cereal, including the healthy alternatives. other foods that also caused my sugar to spike were bananas, starchy vegetables, and rice. dr said i could have jasmine rice, but one night i had 1/3 cup of rice with 1/3 of beans with 2 corn tortillas & it spiked like crazy and i freaked. we knew it was cause of the rice cause i would eat 2 corn tortillas & 1 egg for breakfast every day and always get really good numbers. sometimes i would add 1/3 cup of beans to my egg and it was also fine. so i just cut out rice altogether. i recommend ezekiel 4:9 bread, it’s GD friendly and never caused spikes!

@theneno1012 thank you! i am so new to all of this, and its a bit overwhelming.

I definitely over corrected, I never noticed my sugar being high but even though it wasn't *low* it felt like I was bottoming out.

They just told me to take my R before eating, I didn’t think to ask how long before. I’ve just been giving myself the shot right before I eat- I will try to space it out to about 30 minutes prior!

I usually eat chia seed pudding (plain greek yogurt and splash of 1% milk) with a bit of honey or maple syrup and cinnamon for breakfast. They told me that should be fine as long as I don’t over do the sweetner, of course. My husband suggested the cereal to bring it up faster, especially since I was so shaky and dizzy.

    @little@littlebabybuster
I actually ate maybe 1/4c of rice in a protein bowl yesterday and my sugar wasn’t terrible! About 146, which for me was one of the lowest readings I had since my glucose test! I’m hoping once I get adjusted to taking the insulin I can test and see what I can eat without sugar spikes. My levels are back down to 92 and I feel a lot better, but I haven’t had any carbs since breakfast since it jumped my sugar up so high.
  • Failed my 1 hour test, need to schedule the 3 hour for next week :/
  • sph97sph97 member
@littlebabybuster they thought I had GD with my first he was so big, but I didn’t! He was just big lol. Chunky babies are the sweetest. His jaws just hung off his little face, I miss it!

Now I do have GD AND a big baby 😅
  • I have to submit my next batch of readings tomorrow. If they are all within goal they may let me stop testing. I am a little nervous about not testing though
  • At my 3 hour test, wow the 3 hour drink is a lot more rough than the 1 hour
