Baby aspirin

Had my 14 week check in today and was prompted to begin with 2 baby aspirin a day. I really was against taking this but my midwife said due to age the risk of potential birth/labor complication severely decreased when taking. So I bought some band on the label it states not to take when pregnant specifically after week 20 due to potential birth defects and labor complications.

Anyone have experience/additional thoughts or info on the whole thing?

thanks!

Re: Baby aspirin

  • Lurking from August 24, but also on baby aspirin since 12 weeks. The labeling on the bottle is because aspirin at much higher doses than what your midwife recommended can cause a premature closure of something called the PDA which can cause serious issues. However 162mg of aspirin daily is not enough to cause this to happen.

Research does show that it helps to reduce risk for preeclampsia. In my case, I’m am on it to prevent blood clots in the placenta after having come down with Covid at week 8.

    hope that helps!

  • @theneno1012 yes the explanation of the specific dosage is helpful, thank you!
  • I am on it due to blood pressure elevation
  • I’m also on it because I developed preeclampsia during my first pregnancy, and I trust my OB’s recommendation. The baby aspirin tabs should be low-dose and slow release, which also helps!

My doc recommended it at week 12 but I decided not to as she provided zero reason, I assumed my blood pressure was high and have been worried about it for the past month. Yesterday I had my 15 week and asked the doc about it as my blood pressure was high at first and then they had me relax and it went to normal. Doc yesterday said that due to my age and weight it’s just a blanket recommendation 🤦🏼‍♀️. Like…why didn’t the first doc just tell me that? I said I don’t like taking meds, so you suggest a med with no explanation. Reasons why I don’t like doctors, I’m not an idiot, just talk to me. Sorry for the rant, guess I’ll start taking my aspirin today.
  • I took it during my first pregnancy and had no issues. Taking it this time too. Started taking it early in my first because of recurrent loss, it helped prevent blood clots which can be more common in pregnancy
  • My doctor told me age and weight. She was a new OB. I literally just had a baby last summer. I may be 5 lbs heavier than I was then.
I ha e never had HBP, any signs of preclampsia, nothing. So I declined as she didn't check into anything. Just immediately prescribed it. I don't like docs that don't do their jobs. It's simple to assess a patient. We pay out the ass... come on. There are many studies showing issues like fetal kidney issues and much more.

It is of course a helpful thing if you have a need for it. Or have a history of needing it. When you don't it seems unnecessary. Especially when doc doesn't want to further analyze it.
  • My doctor suggested I take 81mg daily after my appointment this week (18 weeks). Said it helps with the placenta
  • I had the gastric sleeve so I shouldn’t be taking aspirin, but my doctor suggested it. I’m not sure if low dose aspirin is ok or not.
  • I also had severe preeclampsia during my first pregnancy (now prego with my second). How are you handling things?
