Vaginal Progesterone = Instant Dad Gut?

Hi All,
I saw a few other discussions about this but I wanted to know if anyone has experienced a loss in muscle definition and rapid weight gain while on vaginal progesterone? I was put on it as soon as I learned I was pregnant, and I feel like my stomach is hiding behind a wall of jello in such a short amount of time. I’ve read that progesterone can loosen the muscles and cause water retention in addition to slowing your metabolism, but this feels nuts. I’ve been on it for about 4 weeks now, have been eating healthily and exercising more frequently and this straight up gut has taken up residency.

I am a type 1 diabetic who also has Grave’s Disease (hyperthyroidism), and bloodwork on both of those fronts looks good.

Anyone else experiencing this? Is this just my life now?

  • I feel like it gives me more bloat. More of a belly.
I'm lurking from the Dec group because ours hasn't picked up yet. ;)

  • Yes!
I’ve been on and off progesterone for 7 years and while my weight hasn’t fluctuated too much from the initial weight gain, the last few years has just been belly bloat.
When I lost our last and we took a break, my belly was going back to normal.
I’m 6 weeks today and look 3-4 months preganant 😭
  • Thank you for the feedback! I also lost my first pregnancy (at 6 months and 5 days), so I’m wondering if the PA put me on progesterone for that reason.

My current pregnancy has also been a little strange in that my last period was actually January 15, which in theory should make me further along than what the ultrasounds are showing. I had an SIS procedure at the end of January (that thing where whey put the balloon up your hoo hah and power wash your uterus? 0/10 would not recommend). Anyways, I didn’t get my period in February, but my preg tests all showed negative when I tested on Feb 18, 20, 23. I’ve never missed a period before, but thought the power wash may have thrown things off, so my husband and I just started trying again and tracking ovulation.

I took a preg test again on March 6 after my LH surge was higher than it’s ever been, for longer than it’s ever been (more than a week), and turns out I was pregnant, and then immediately started the progesterone.

Long story short, on 3/21 they dated me at 6 weeks 1 day, so it seems like my body is just doing whatever it wants lol. It’s helpful to know that others have been experienced this on progesterone as well! Everyone keeps telling me I won’t see any changes until 15-20 weeks but I definitely am blowing up.
  • Welcome! :) I was going to do the same with the Oct group because they may take me a little early.
  • I started taking progesterone as well around week 5 and am definitely bloated all the time. I can’t tell if that’s normal pregnancy bloat or exaggerated bc of the progesterone. I had a chemical pregnancy and a blighted ovum, so it was recommended regardless of what my levels actually were. Hopefully things get better next month for everyone?

Does anyone know if progesterone vaginal suppositories cause UTIs? I just found out I have a UTI (never had one before), and am now wondering if the progesterone could be the cause.

I understand how tough this must be for you. Many women experience unexpected body changes when taking vaginal progesterone during pregnancy. Losing muscle and gaining weight, especially around your belly, can be a side effect. Progesterone can cause fluid retention, softer muscles, and a slower metabolism. These side effects are common and usually go away after you stop taking the medication. Talk to your doctor about what you're experiencing. Keep eating healthy and moving as you can, and focus on your and your baby's health. You’re doing great!
  • Hi! I saw your comment and couldn’t help but reach out; I am 35 on my 3rd pregnancy (12W2D) with a small SCH diagnosis; I experienced a chemical pregnancy and then a blighted ovum pregnancy as well and have been on suppository micronized progesterone at 800 mg daily. I haven’t had a UTI as of yet but I have read plenty and I believe it can cause this esp if you have any allergies to contents of the progesterone! I hope everything goes well for you <3
