June 2024 Moms

2 vessel cord

I recently had my anatomy scan at 19 1/2 weeks and was told my baby has a 2 vessel cord. He is currently measuring in the 61st percentile and all organs look great at this time. I am a first time mom and definitely freaking out about what this could mean for his future growth and ultimately a healthy outcome.

I know it's easy to panic, but your health care team should show an appropriate amount of concern and attention to the issue. I have a similar but different condition found at my anatomy scan a few weeks ago, of somewhat MCI and will require additional growth scans every 4 weeks for the remainder of my pregnancy. Also FTM and learning about these diagnoses for the first time. It's hard not to worry a little, but my doctor told us not to be worried. On the positive side, we will be seeing our healthy baby extra times for reassurance! And I have been feeling so much movement since then which really helps to calm the nerves.

Bottom line is that unless they find other anomalies, the outcome for the majority of 2 vessel babies is that they will be born healthy without IUGR. Similar for my diagnosis. Hang in there and please ask all of the questions you want to your medical team!

  • I second everything that @stress_engine said. I also have some high risk stuff going on with this pregnancy and it can be hard not to panic google or jump to the worst possible conclusion. It’s good news that all is looking good so far, and I am sure your team will follow up and keep an eye on things moving forward. If you find yourself really struggling with anxiety it can also be helpful to talk to a professional. Pregnancy is stressful and so much more so when you’re dealing with a high risk situation. Keep your head up Mama, you’ve got this!
  • Also diagnosed with a 2 vessel cord. This is also my first pregnancy.

Unfortunately I also have diabetes and at the start of my pregnancy I had light bleeding for weeks. It’s easy to get terrified when thinking about everything that can go wrong.

Thankfully my team of doctors I have in place right now is fantastic. After my anatomy scan, I got sent for a 2nd level ultrasound where they did a detailed check of the babies heart, kidneys and brain. Everything looks good.

Moving forward, starting at 28 weeks I will be having growth scans every 4 weeks. Because I have multiple high risk reasons, they will be monitoring if the baby grows too big or if it doesn’t grow enough.

My best advice is to talk with your doctor if you are concerned and try to focus on feeling the baby move to reassure you that everything is ok.
