Baby mittens for thumb sucking

Hi moms! My 4 month old just started sucking get thumb. It’s been helping her self sooth to fall back asleep at night. I usually put her in the onesies with the hand covers or occasionally in mittens but this doesn’t give her access to her thumb and she gets frustrated. I can’t find any mittens with a thumb hole on the market. Any suggestions?

  • I just wouldn’t cover her hands at all if you’re okay with her sucking her thumb

  • My daughter has just recently started sucking her thumb and uses it to self soothe herself at night and during the day when she is napping. I don't cover her hands because she is still slowly learning how to explore with them. Meaning grabbing, gripping, putting them in her mouth and playing with them at times. In my opinion I would just let her be hopefully she will stop on her own. But you do what you feel is best for you and your daughter
  • It’s developmentally normal. Don’t cover them.
  • I know this is a delayed response at this point, but I just wanted to say that I am now having the same issue and am looking for a solution as well. (So you're not the only one!) We use the mitts/sleeve covers because our little one scratches her face otherwise, but I would love for her to be able to soothe herself by sucking her thumb and she has recently been showing interest in trying to do so. I hope you were able to find a solution!
  • They have baby nail files on Amazon that make keeping nails trimmed easy. They don’t hurt at all and can be used all throughout childhood and for adults as well (they come with multiple grit filers for different ages). That might help with the nail issue so you can keep baby’s hands uncovered. If you search ‘baby nail trimmer electric’ on amazon a bunch of options will pop up and they’re pretty cheap. The one I got was around $10-15.
  • We went through the same at 4 months! I ended up ditching the mittens because she was clearly using her thumb to soothe. I just keep her nails trimmed and let her have at it. Way easier for sleep, honestly.
  • A friend suggested ditching mittens entirely and just keeping nails trimmed with a baby nail file. Often the sucking won’t hurt and helps them self-soothe at night
