Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Open mouth sleeping but not breathing through mouth

My now 3 month year old has very bad reflux and has had it since about 6 days old. In the beginning, I was told that the loud breathing was normal and could also be from the reflux entering his airways. Now he’s 3 months and I noticed that sometimes he sleeps with his mouth open and he is still a pretty loud breather. Breastfeeding has been fine so it has been confusing on what I should do or if it is even a problem. Any advice?

  • Ours does this too, and our dr actually told us today that this is normal as I guess babies naturally default to breathing through their noses and often breathe loudly

  • My kid was diagnosed with laryngomalacia when she was about 2 months old, which contributed to her noisy breathing. She also had a sleep study done in December because I noticed she would stop breathing for 5-10 seconds. Turns out she has obstructive sleep apnea.

She had surgery done a month ago to reconstruct her airway. She is fine. This is not meant to scare you in any way - this was just my experience.
