Baby's first heartbeat

Hi ladies, I just had my first scan today at 7weeks. OBGYN was able to detect the baby, but no heart beat yet. He's having me come back in two weeks and told me that we should be expecting a heartbeat by next visit. I asked what happens if there's no heartbeat next time? He said it wouldn't be a good pregnancy. I'm so nervous right now. My best friend who's an NP said sometimes they don't detect it until 8ish weeks, so I'm hopeful. However, just curious about other people's experiences.

Re: Baby's first heartbeat

  • I had the same experience. Went for my first appointment yesterday at 7 weeks. Doctor did an ultrasound and found a sac and baby measuring 7 weeks but she said too early to detect heartbeat and should detect and next appointment in 2 weeks. Sort of stressful but just trying to be patient.

  • Sending good vibes your way! Sounds like measurements are spot on!

  • I understand that this can be a very unnerving time for you. In the early stages of pregnancy it can indeed sometimes be difficult to detect a heartbeat, and this does not always mean a problem. Some factors such as the exact time of conception, individual physiological characteristics and the quality of equipment can affect the ability to detect a heartbeat in early pregnancy. If a heartbeat is detected at the next visit, this is likely to confirm a normal pregnancy. Otherwise, your doctor may recommend additional tests or just waiting a little longer, as the early stages of pregnancy can be ambiguous. Don't worry, everything will be fine) I hope that your next visit to the doctor will bring you reassurance and happy news.
