Baby 99 percentille

Good morning! I am 19w2d
I did my anatomy scan on Monday 18w5d and the girl doing it was very positive, “perfect”, “very good”. When I was done nobody came to talk to me, never got a call from my doctor. Yesterday I got the results posted on the portal, called them if somebody could explain it to me. The nurse said everything is good, just the baby is measuring big. I was like “what?” She did not explain very good but looking at the report I saw the is weighing 333grams and he should be at 230grams. I called again and she said nothing to worry about but I am worried lol. Did anyone have experience like that? Thank you!

Re: Baby 99 percentille

  • Yes, this happened to me. My first was huge (10.5 pounds) but we only had 2 scans with her, and I think she was 80th percentile at 20 weeks. My second was measuring ahead the whole way, in the 99th percentile already at 20 weeks, and measuring 40 weeks at our 32 week scan. He came out a few days before his due date at 11 pounds 4 ounces. I never had gestational diabetes and both babies were born healthy.

A few things to keep in mind. Big babies can be genetic, but they can also be caused by gestational diabetes. Ultrasound measurements are also not perfect, and get less reliable as you get further into pregnancy. A big baby does not necessarily pose a problem for vaginal delivery and does not automatically mean you need a c section, but it can increase the risk of certain complications, like shoulder dytocia. Finally, if your doctor is not concerned I would trust their professional judgement. They will tell you if it was something to worry about.

  • My baby is also on the bigger side, both weight and height wise. My OB hasn’t said anything but one of the specialist I am seeing keeps asking if me and my husband are tall (we are not haha). He has been testing my blood sugar for other reasons and it’s always been on the normal-low side so he said it is probably just a genetic thing and it shouldn’t be anything to worry about! My brother was really big in the second trimester and then his growth slowed a bit and he was born 8 lbs and healthy! So I think that can also happen
  • FTM, but I had my scan at 19w 3d. My doctor said that they don't actually measure by percentile until later after 22w+ I think. The number that they wanted to see on the "grams" measurement was a target of around 300g. That is calculated  based on the 4 measurements that you will see presented in estimated weeks. Head circumference, crown to rump length, and a couple others that I can't remember off the top of my mind. But they all will have an estimated weeks + days number. They wouldn't be concerned until/unless those numbers were measuring at like 4+ weeks ahead or behind. Follow up with your provider, they should go over the results with you. I was also sent my results so I have them downloaded to look at if I ever need to.
  • Same! At my 15 week appointment my baby girl weighed 7oz and they said that the average was closer to 3.5oz. She’s also in the 99th percentile for size but keeping my fingers crossed that everything is OK on our upcoming 20 week scan. I was a 10lb baby myself and I have a nephew who is almost 7ft tall so maybe it’s just genetic. We shall see!
