I breastfed, and thankfully neither one of my kids were picky about bottles.
I started using Dr. Brown's with my oldest because he had stomach issues. I didn't think they helped with the gas, and all the tiny parts drove me nuts, so I switched to Como Tomo. I loved those and used them with my second child as well.
As far as how many, I want to to say I had enough bottles to last through 2 days of daycare since I nursed them when they were home.. maybe 8-10 total.

We just used the Dr. Brown's narrow neck bottles, but I got the Babylist variety box on my registry, which I was glad to have in case we had trouble finding a bottle that worked (we didn't so we only tried the one). In terms of how many to get, I would start with just one or two, especially if you are trying multiple brands. We have a TON, but that's because we got sick of washing bottles for daycare (and in the long run how often you are willing to wash them will be a big factor)
I feel like I post about her A LOT (she's so helpful), but Karrie Locher on Instagram just did some stories on bottle feeding a breastfed babies that was really helpful informative - as far as I can tell they aren't saved in highlights, but some things she mentions on bottles are below:
Slow flow nipple (most bottles have these options, but you want to start with the slowest flow nipple available for the bottle)
A lot of bottles that say they are "just like the breast" are actually not
For nipples - look for a shape that has a gradual slope of the nipple, a gradual change from base to tip (as opposed to a wide base with a small tip of the nipple, which can potentially promote a more shallow latch)
Some bottle options she mentioned are Evenflo Balance and Pigeon brand
I’m a FTM and I’ve received a set of the Dr. Browns bottles. I also put a set of Philips Avent bottles on my registry as well.
I was reading that using a pacifier and bottle nipple that are similar to each other can be helpful. So I’ve also put some Philips Avent pacifiers on my registry.
@feli14 It could be, but from my personal experience, the pacifiers she preferred were quite different from the bottle nipples. That said the Philips Avent pacifiers are great ones to start with (and is what we were given at the hospital).
We used Dr Brown’s bottles for both my kids. They were breastfed, and transitioned to breast milk in bottles for daycare. They have extra pieces which is annoying for cleaning and sterilizing, but I do feel like they reduced tummy issues. Not sure about the nipple similarity thing with pacifiers. Neither of my kids would take one. It’s like once they realized no milk was coming out they would just spit it out lol.
I really like the idea of the bottle and paci sample packs I have seen. It’s nice to try different things before investing in a whole set.
My one warning with the paci sample packs is that you have no idea how much the pacis cost. My daughter ended up liking one which was ridiculously expensive, which if it's all she would take I would have been okay with, but I think she might have taken others if I had tried them first. I still love the sample pack, but it maybe worth looking into the pacis before you actually offer them!
@curlyandpreggo oh that is a good point I didn’t think about! I have the sample pack on my registry and I will have to make sure to look into the ones they send!
