Re: Gestational diabetes January 2023

  • my MFM has been telling me to let her know if I have two readings over 155 in a day and that finally happened today. Not sure what that will mean for me. I’m not on the full daily dose of Metformin yet so I’m hoping I can try that but I wonder if that’s just a straight shot to insulin?

  • Loading the player...
  • My gd test is tomorrow and I'm nervous! I barely passed with my first (133) and plan on fasting before taking it so fingers crossed (but also, this baby has had a lot of chocolate so far this pregnancy...)

Also @ceclarlinetlo 0 shade only wild acknowledgement that it's 2024 which feels nuts to me (though 2023 was a long year...)
  • @pocketrose at first I was like what is she talking about??? So I scrolled back up to see what I had written before and then I saw the thread title 😂 Whoopsidoodle

  • Moving my question to our new thread!! Question-does anyone have any "go to" snacks? I feel pretty good about being able to balance my meals, but snacks have been hard for me: I'm getting tired of cheese and hard boiled eggs
  • @M2b2024 my go to is trail mix packs. My usual is peanuts, cashews and dried cranberries but I also have one that is peanuts, almonds and dark chocolate that has the same amount of sugar. I’ll also do Greek yogurt with walnuts.

  • @m2b2024 I do whole grain toast with peanut butter (sometimes with sliced apple), apple and peanut butter, cheese with rye crackers, and plain Greek yogurt with granola and blueberries.

  • @m2b2024 I’ve been doing protein bars and cheese/pepperoni/cracker plates this week. I bought some rice cakes, apples and natural peanut butter to try this morning for the next weeks snacks. I’ve done ok with Cucumber and hummus or ranch. Olives are low carb. Trail mix or mixed nuts is a convenient one for when you’re out.
  • Womp womp, failed the 1 hour (barely, reading was 144 and I think under 135 or 140 would have been fine) so on to the 3 hour for me sometime next week and a looooot of clean eating until then.
  • @pocketrose Don't worry too much - the 1 hr is designed to have a high percentage of people fail, so that they are more likely to catch anyone who actually has GD with the 3 hr. I failed the 1 hour with both of my other kids, but passed the 3 hour both of those times. Especially with a low result of 144, you'll probably be ok!

  • @pocketrose sorry you failed and have to do the 3 hour! With numbers that close I would hope you pass the 3 hour easily. I failed close like that with my first 2 and passed the 3 hour as @hedgepig said she did.

If anyone is missing bread and likes to bake I made this honey whole wheat sandwich bread yesterday and it didn’t screw up my numbers for breakfast this morning🎉. It was so satisfying, I had one slice with natural peanut butter and 8oz milk with protein powder. As an added bonus my boys have eaten an entire loaf already between yesterday and today lunches and snacking. They weren’t loving our last sandwich bread recipe so we may be switching permanently lol.

  • Kinda ranty-

Sent my weekly log in to my doc this morning. I had 3 dinners that were between 120-130 this week. And his immediate response was to send a metformin prescription. I’m feeling really mad about it. I have still received no diet counseling despite asking 2 of the 3 providers in my clinic. Personally I know those 3 meals were over because I ate fast food or high carb foods all 3 of those dinners because they were birthday parties where I had no good options and my kids sports banquet, again no good options. All of my other meals are well below the 120 limit and good fasting numbers. It feels really shitty and dismissive to get the response you have some bad numbers here's have some medication instead of the diet help you’ve requested🙄
  • Anyone else have difficulty managing numbers when sick?? I felt like my numbers were doing well, but I have been sick and now they are kind of wonky.
  • @m2b2024 yes, I've had covid and the flu since my diagnosis, and the cortisol from being sick will spike you. I'd just note that in your logs so that your docs know it wasn't diet related. If they're ok with you taking magnesium supplements, that really helped mine. Plus sleep and keeping hydrated. Feel better!!
  • I met with MFM yesterday, and they're happy enough with my progress to keep me off of meds for now. I have to send my numbers back in 2 weeks from now, but I'm feeling really positive about it! Baby has stayed in the 64th percentile, so they'll measure him again in a month to make sure he hasn't grown too big. Things that have helped my numbers: protein drinks and shooting for 100mg of protein daily, walks after meals, hydrating through the night, unisom and magnesium for good sleep, meat sticks as late night snacks, cutting simple carbs, eating protein first in my meals. There's hope, mamas!
  • 3 hour test tomorrow, have attempted to eat as clean as possible today/generally eat cleaner since failing the 1 iron (and being a little anemic) with a high protein/iron/low carb dinner coming up, fingers crossed it goes well.
  • @pocketrose hoping for the best for you!

  • I got a text today that I was being discharged from the nursing office that I was reporting my blood sugars to because most of my numbers have been in range. They told me to keep recording them for my doctors visits but I still think that's a little odd.

  • @ceclarlinetlo huh, that IS interesting. I was under the impression it could get more difficult to keep numbers at bay the larger your placenta and baby grow. Maybe if you have an unexpected spike your ob will just refer you back again? But that's excellent news that they're happy enough with your Numbers that they're de-escalating your case. Congratulations mama!
  • @kmw611 my advice would be to not take it and try to keep your numbers diet controlled better and then prove to your doc you don’t need it. It’s your body, so if you want to go diet controlled until you just absolutely can’t, you can choose to.

A couple thoughts from last time I had GD: plain vanilla bean ice cream, one small scoop, with a bunch of no sugar added, natural peanut butter to balance it, was the only dessert I could have and I ended up loving it.

Kodiak cakes protein waffles with pb make a good breakfast for awhile. Eventually I couldn’t do those either, but for the first month of gd they were nice.

Yasso bars can make a great bedtime snack paired with a small protein like a beef or turkey stick or piece of cheese

Get sugar free syrup in your coffees and pair with extra heavy cream for a fat/protein balance

Cannot recommend enough joining a GD support/meal ideas group on Facebook.

(Lurking from May24, waiting for my second glucose test on 2/7 to see if I have it again which I prob will given the high reoccurrence rate.)
  • Thank yall so much for sharing! I just got my call today and freaked out to be honest. In reading what everyone has shared it makes me feel like it's totally manageable. It's nice to not be alone.
