I always wanted my kiddos NN to be Alex. That lasted all but 2 seconds.
She was Allie through her younger years, my Grandma called her Lexi, and she is the only one that ever did. Then in 2nd grade she told us that she doesn't want to be called Allie, she only wants to be called by her given name.
Just play around with it and see how you feel; Z, Zay, something totally different. I agree with @harpseal135 - I think you'll have an idea in your head of what you'll call him, but that could change once he's here and you play around with it. The name we're choosing for our daughter doesn't really have anything for a nickname, but I'm sure once she's here we'll be calling her all kinds of things!
Older post but my 2 cents are that sometimes NNs don't have anything to do with your name at all. Most of my cousins and brothers have NNs that are like Mouse, Elmo, Eddie (his name has no inclination for an Eddie NN) peanut, bell, etc. Sometimes they do, sometimes it's something different entirely. My name is Chelsea and I've been called Chely by friends since middle school🤷🏼♀️

To this day only close family calls her Allie.
Others could be:
Zay
Zay-Rob
Z-Rob
Zay-Ro
Zen
