Trying to Get Pregnant

2 Positive and 3 Negative Tests... Confused?

Hi everyone,

My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant now for a little over a year. We have had no luck, and are at the point where we are exploring other options (IVF, fertility meds, etc). I have primary infertility (caused by an autoimmune disorder that has lead to a tumor in my hypothalamus that causes depleted hormones) and I don't have a period AT ALL without medication. That being said, I have no real way of determining when I'm ovulating or when I would be considered "late". Since we started trying, I have gotten into the habit of testing about 2 - 3 times a month, and up to this point, I have had no positive results at all, not even faint ones or "evaporation lines".

Yesterday, on a whim, I decided to test. I took 2 Clear Blue tests, and both of them read "positive", though they were faint. Those two tests were taken around 7pm. This morning, I took 2 more tests (First Response this time) first thing in the morning and both of those were negative. My doctor told me to tell her if I see anything that looks like a positive test, so I sent her pictures of all 4 of them. She said the two Clear Blue tests looked positive, and she ordered a blood test to help clear things up. That test came back with a level <0.2.

I've heard that it's hard to get a truly accurate read before 5 weeks and, if those positives were correct, it could be anywhere between 2 - 4 weeks... So could that be part of the problem?

So, clearly, that means I'm not pregnant, right? I'm just so confused. I've heard that false positives and false negatives are rare, so why did I get TWO false positives in the same day??

Anyone ever experience something like this? Do you have advice or thoughts? I'd appreciate anything.

Thanks everyone.

  • I'm really sorry to hear about your struggles with infertility. It's a challenging journey, and I can understand how the conflicting test results could be confusing and emotionally draining, but you should know that home pregnancy tests are not foolproof and can sometimes give false-positive or false-negative results.
Regarding the timing of the tests, it's recommended to wait until 1 week after you expect your period to start to use an at-home pregnancy test. Since you mentioned that you don't have a period without medication, this might be a bit more challenging to determine.
As for the blood test, a less than 0.2 is typically considered not pregnant. I think discussing these results with your doctor is always best, as they completely understand your medical history and can provide the most accurate advice.
In terms of fertility treatments, personally, I took IVF treatment in Cyprus in 2020 since my husband and I were diagnosed to be infertile after almost 5 years of TTC. And it is one of the best decisions I've ever made. Don't feel discouraged. Stay strong and you can do this. Sending hugs here.

  • Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

It’s very discouraging, especially to have two come back with false positives at the same time. We have a meeting with a fertility specialist next week, but it’s hard to see something and get your hopes up for nothing.

What medication do you take to give you a period? If you need to take that every cycle, then I would think that means you aren’t ovulating at all. Usually for that, doctors will try giving you Clomid and monitoring via ultrasounds so that you know when you ovulate. Your fertility specialist will probably recommend something along those lines

ETA: Also feel free to join in on our weekly threads. We have one specifically for those of us going through IF testing and treatment
  • Thank you. They give me Provera to induce periods. And you’re correct—the current theory is that I either don’t ovulate at all, or I have a very low egg reserve. So the next step is going to be starting medication for ovulation. Clomid is the one that they keep bringing up the most, I have also heard positive things about letrozole, they’re still going back-and-forth about what exactly they’re going to do but those are two of the options that they have mentioned.
