Breast Pumps, etc.

With the new year and new insurance plans, the question of breast pumps is at least on the forefront of my mind. So what pumps have you found really effective or ineffective? Any tips for new pumping moms? Pumps you're looking at and want an opinion on?

Re: Breast Pumps, etc.

  • To start, I loved my Spectra S2. It worked great for me for the eight months or so that I was pumping. This time around, I have new insurance, and they don't cover Spectra, but they do cover the Motif Duo, which I was looking at getting because it would let me be more mobile while pumping. Any experience with this one?

Tips: I actually really liked having a pump at home and a separate pump at work so that I didn't have to carry the whole bag back and forth. Also, a manual pump is super useful to have on hand, especially if you have a child like mine who only nurses on one side at a time.

  • @practicallypierson no help with breast pumps. Did you get rid of your spectra?
  • I didn't. I planned to hang onto it and have it as my main option at home, and just use the more portable option at work.
  • Honestly my best response to a pump was the manual lansinoh pump and the haakaa on the the other boob🙃
  • I had the Spectra S1 and liked it. I liked that it had a battery, so I didnt have to be right next to an outlet to use it, and you could do single or double pumping. The branded parts (flanges, duckbill, backflow protectors etc) are pricey but it's such a common brand you can get knock-offs on Amazon so that you're not always. washing. pump parts.
I have new insurance this time so I've been meaning to call and see what I qualify for. TBH I haven't even checked if the Spectra is still kicking (I'm guessing it still works) but if it's a benefit offered, I'm going to make sure I take advantage.
I had the haakaa and I'm glad I did but I never truly got the hang of it/guess I didn't need to. I would just use the Spectra in those situations.
  • Also, please(!!!!) do yourself a favor and measure yourself for the right flange size or it's going to be a bad time. I've heard that the usual sizes pumps come with fit very few people, so don't just rely on that.
