1st Trimester

6 day difference in baby’s growth and due date

We had our first ultrasound appointment today. We were expecting to be 8 weeks and 2 days. We were thankful to hear a heart beat, which was at 160. We were a little thrown off they told us the baby was measuring 7 weeks 3 days instead of 8 weeks 2 days. We were told to come back in two weeks to check the baby’s growth.

This had my husband and I in a bit of a panic. We talked to three different professionals in the office, first time parents so we were those people, and they all told us this is common. We felt like the way the news was delivered was dismissive and insensitive to our concerns. We are still a little scared that something isn’t going to be right when we go back in two weeks. We aren’t sure if the delivery of the news was poor and made us freak out or if this new should have us nervous.

We were excited for today, and the news caught us off guard.

Re: 6 day difference in baby’s growth and due date

  • When I went for my first ultrasound for my first baby, I was also about 2 weeks behind than I expected as I based it on my LMP. I thought I was 9w but was measuring 7w. It’s really hard to tell when conception really happened but they always go by LMP until the first ultrasound which gives the better idea of gestational age. My baby was born at 40w 4 days.

I know it’s scary but they definitely should’ve been more sensitive and gentler with their explanation.

  • Sperm can live up to five days - it all depends on ovulation - LMP really is a terrible way to determine gestation as it widely varies

  • It's pretty common. It happened with both of my girls. Went in at "8 weeks" and measured 7. At some point, like 13 weeks, they started measuring closer to 14 weeks. It's never going to be exact.
  • Definitely don't panic. It's very comment for your calculated date to be inaccurate, even if you know exactly what day you had sex. Sperm lives up to 5 days, you don't know exactly when you ovulated, etc. Ultrasound measurements are also subjective; two techs can work on the same mom and get different measurements. And even if you know exactly when you conceived, you can be a week of in those early measurements and fine. We did IVF, so we know exactly when sperm met egg. Even so, my first trimester I measured about a week behind. By the third trimester I was measuring 2 weeks ahead, and my baby was born weighing 9lbs at 39+3.

Going back at this point isn't because they think something is wrong, they just need to get the most accurate date. This is really for the end- if you have complications and they're considering inducing they don't want to do it too early, if baby is born early they need to know how early so they have an idea of what support they'll need, if you're overdue they don't want to let you go over 42 weeks (or 40 if you're "geriatric"), etc.
  • Hi! I just had this same thing happen to me. 6 days behind where my LMP says and they asked us to come back in 2 weeks. If you don’t mind me asking, did they just change your due date?
