Re: Healthy Habits - December

  • No specific goals to add, but I'd really like to add in some more workouts as I get to the second trimester. I've been doing weekly yoga and walking most days, but hoping I feel well enough to add some other things soon!

  • My forever goal is to move my body 30 minutes a day. I’m pleased to say that after most of first trimester when I definitely did not accomplish that goal, I’m moving in the right direction. I’ve been getting back on the Peloton and started some prenatal weight training to go along with my walks and my yoga. Feels good to get moving again!
  • I'd like to get back to exercising 4-5x a week since exercise is not such a struggle anymore. I did a cardio class today and feel great! There's a stretching class that my barre studio offers about once a week, and it feels amazing right now.

I also would like to start eating a healthier diet. I had a fairly balanced diet pre-pregnancy, but that went out the window when I was feeling so awful.

    DS2: Jan 2019
    Baby #3 EDD: 6/18/24

  • I feel like I have finally started get back into the habit of exercising regularly after the first trimester exhaustion and nausea completely kicked my butt. I aim to do a 15-20 min walk every day and then some sort of strength/yoga training 3x a week.

I get out of breath really easy right now so I am taking it slow. Does anyone know if the out of breath thing is pregnancy related or is it because I took a few weeks off in the first trimester?

@sbaby2023, shortness of breath (dyspnea) is a pregnancy symptom! Due to high progesterone levels and also increasingly crowded organs later in pregnancy.

This was one of my early symptoms before I had taken a pregnancy test. I knew what to look for as I have occasionally experienced shortness of breath from really bad allergies. It was persistent all day and I felt winded going up a few flights of stairs to get into work!

I think another really fun fact is that in pregnancy the blood volume level increases by 40% of it's normal amount. Our hearts are working much harder to pump all of that blood to placenta and baby and everywhere else that it still needs to go within our own bodies! Increased need for oxygen is a really important component to this process as well!

That being said, you can keep doing everything that you want to do to stay active in pregnancy as long as you can do those activities safely.
  • Thanks @stress_engine that’s really interesting about the blood volume increasing that much! Makes me feel better as I also get i
winded walking up the stairs and was thinking I was super out of shape haha
  • @sbaby2023 It’s been happening to me too! Before I was pregnant I could run miles without breaking a sweat and now I get winded carrying laundry up the stairs!
  • I don’t have a goal. Other than I want to start moving more and being deliberate about building in exercise.

Likely small steps at first but I may go to the community pool to try and do some low impact exercise and to try and keep my skin hydrated.

This dry and cold weather has been terrible for my skin and the winter is only just beginning.

I’m interested to know if any of you follow any YouTube pregnancy workouts?
  • A friend of mine reccomended the Body Ready Method online program. I don't have a good review on that yet, just purchased this week since I was a little on the fence with the cost.

I also subscribed to the Pregnancy and Postpartum TV youtube channel. Interested to see what they offer.
  • @stress_engine that YouTube channel looks fantastic I’ll have to try this out
  • Not YouTube but I used Tone it up and they have a pregnancy program and a postpartum program. I also enjoy their non-pregnant workouts as well. It costs money but I have found it’s worth the cost as it motivates me to have a planned workout schedule
  • @sbaby2023 I have been a Sweat app user for years, but their pregnancy programming isn’t great. I’ve been wondering about Tone it up! Are the workouts guided (like a continuous video of someone doing the workout) or does it just tell you which exercises to do?

@maggiemadeit they are continuous videos of someone doing a workout. One of the founders did the program while she was pregnant and sometimes brings guest people in as well. I think they offer a 14 day free trial (or something similar) so you can try it out!

Finally did my first workout in a while. In trying to do what to decide what to do I did some research and remembered a YouTube workout I found and loved towards the end of my last pregnancy - and it’s free! Just did one today and it was great!

She was due in June 2022, so you can pretty much follow along with her dates wise to be around the same point in your pregnancy as her. The programs in order are Activate (January - Weeks 16-19), Crush (February - Weeks 20-23), Energy (March - Weeks 24-27), Momentum (April - Weeks 28-32), Push (May - Weeks 33-36), and June 2022 Program (Weeks 37-40)

  • In addition to Sydney Cummings, I found another YouTube workout recommendation from a friend from my last pregnancy that I thought I would share: Nourish Move Love (She has a pregnancy and postpartum workouts playlist): https://www.youtube.com/c/nourishmovelove

Also tagging @feli14 since I think you originally asked about YouTube workouts

I've also heard good things about Expecting and Empowered, but that's an app you have to pay for.
  • @curlyandpreggo thanks! I’ll add that to my list as well!
  • Hi, my health goals are to snack healthier instead of giving in to every craving. Gonna try for 1 junk food a day limit. I also walk my toddler to playgroup every day for a total of 20 minutes each way so 40 minutes per day. The way home is a serious hill and I get so winded from it! I can barely breath...I'm trying to hold off hiring the driver they have because I'll be a couch potato if I'm not forced to exercise. But that's where I'm at now!
  • I tried out my first prenatal yoga class yesterday. It felt really great and a good opportunity to get to know other new moms in the community.
  • @feli14 I absolutely LOVE prenatal yoga - it feels so good for my body and the one in my neighborhood is so great for meeting other pregnant women nearby. I'm sad it's harder to go for my second pregnancy than it was the first time around, but I'm so happy my husband is helping me prioritize it whenever I can. I literally feel the difference when I don't go! (Side note: I also went into labor right after a prenatal yoga class last time around)
  • That’s great to hear that you enjoy it as well. I like all the modifications and props too. Our class is also taught by a former midwife who is also very knowledgeable on the birthing process
  • I have been doing more prenatal yoga these days too. I use the down dog app and they have a great prenatal section. You are really making in person class sound good though. I’m not sure if they have any in my area but I’m going to look.
  • This Dec & Jan have been really a wet winter where I live in rural CA (aka Mud Season), so I haven’t been doing enough outdoor cardio. My nightly yoga routine has been good for keeping some tone but I wanted to increase with indoor/mat cardio and start to focus on my pelvic floor as my bump grows. I was targeted with The Sculpt Society by Meghan Roup (isn’t it odd how one day suddenly all the ads switch to pregnancy related!?) and decided to go for the free trial. I must admit I’ve been really getting a (booty) kick from it. I enjoy how each week in the program is related to your stage in pregnancy and a different set of workouts, pelvic floor series, and prenatal yoga which is more adaptable to how you feel day by day. If you want to check it out too, here’s a free trial link - you can do 7 days or 1 month > https://refer.thesculptsociety.com/Joslyn!9d8f9f109c!a
  • Hey all! 🌟 My health goal is weight loss. I'm focusing on a balanced diet and daily walks. This week, I conquered my sugar cravings - major win! 💪 Also, tried a delicious quinoa salad recipe. Share your progress and tips! Let's crush our goals together!
