1st Trimester

Anti Kell antibodies, scared mom..

Hi All, looking for some advice/knowledge/experience. This is my 3rd pregnancy. (1st born with no pregnancy complications in 2019) (2nd pregnancy was a ealry loss at 5/6weeks) now with 3rd pregnancy, i am 10 weeks. First ultrasound showed all was good but my OB called me a couple days afterwards to say my blood results came back positive for anti kell antibodies so i have been referred to a fetal specialist. I have never had any blood transfusions, not sure if my husband has it. I am freaking out and google shows all these terrible results. We are only seeing the specialist on the 5th of September. I am so worried. . . . Any body out there have any experience with this....

Re: Anti Kell antibodies, scared mom..

  • I have anti kell antibodies. I found out 10 weeks into my second pregnancy but I had a blood transfusion after the birth of my first. My husband was tested and he is kell antigen negative so my pregnancy is not affected. Prior to finding out my husband's status I did some research and I highly suggest joining the Facebook group ISO Moms. You'll get a lot of information there from people who have experienced this and they can help you properly advocate for yourself. It can be scary, but it is good to keep in mind that if your pregnancy is affected, there are lots of success stories with the right treatment and some women and babies need little to no intervention. I wish you the best of luck!

  • Hey! I work in transfusion services, which deals with antibodies. Although you have anti-Kell, it does not mean that your current baby will be affected. It all goes back to genetics, and your current baby may not have the Kell antigen. They will do titers to check your antibody levels, and if it continues to go up, that means your current baby does have the Kell antigen. Intervention can be provided if the baby is affected too much!
