What car seat are you thinking of getting? Will you start with the infant bucket seat or go right to a convertible? STM+: which ones have you had? Likes/dislikes? Questions/Resources to share?
I have one of the graco snug lock infant seats. I don’t think they make my model anymore because I don’t see it on the website. It served its purpose and I got a stroller that came with it. I’ll probably use it again because it’s not expired. I have a second base to put in either my husbands or MIL car. For convertibles we have a graco 3 in 1 slimfit I got on Amazon and a graco 4 in 1 that I got from Costco. They’re okay, easy enough to clean but the straps get uneven sometimes Which is annoying to me but can be fixed. All of the seats are relatively easy to install. I have a Mini Cooper so I’ll put my son behind the drivers seat since he’s front facing now and I’ll put the infant seat behind the passenger seat.
I can’t remember when I switched my son to the convertible. I think it was before his first birthday but I can’t remember. And I switched him to front facing right before his 3rd because he’s just about 40 lbs.
i do have a bit of weird guilt for not buying the expensive seats. But I cannot imagine spending a lot for an infant seat. (Nuna, uppababy, etc). They are pretty though and I like the colors 🤣
We have my sons Graco infant seat still, will probably use that and then get a convertible. We switched my son to a convertible around 8 months and I mostly babywear anyways so not too worried about getting a new fancy travel system. For convertibles, we love both the Graco extend2fit and the Evenflo revolve 360. Will probably do another revolve for my car (LOVE the rotating seat) and extend2fit for my husband's. His car is a lot smaller and since we extended RF he needs a more compact seat. I also highly recommend the IG safeintheseat and the FB group Carseat Safety to new parents they were so helpful for me the first time around.
My two bigs have the graco extend 2 fit 3 in 1, but I assume I’ll start with a bucket seat. Not sure which one. But I love that the extend 2 fit goes all the way to high backed booster, because my 6 year old is about ready for it and it’s nice to not buy a whole new seat. She’s gonna have to get pushed to the back seat when this kid comes anyway. lol.
We purchased the uppababy mesa max with the puretech fabric option. It didn’t used to be called that when we purchased it, but it looks like they now have more car seat options and that’s what they’re calling the one we got now. It mattered to me when I was pregnant with my first to have fire retardant free fabrics and foams. And then we got the uppababy knox when she outgrew the infant seat because we loved the infant seat (worth noting though that I think you need a large suv to fit the uppababy knox). We’ll reuse both of them with our second child.
@hwhitman229 I have the evenflo revolve 360 extend and absolutely LOVE it. So worth it imo. I have a mid-size sedan (mazda 6) and was worried it wouldn't fit, but it actually fits really well. It rotates 360 degrees, even in FF mode (which some don't), has an easy zip off cover, and my son seems to be super comfy in it. I got mine for 280 on prime day, so definitely check for deals (black friday, etc.).
My husband and I both have small cars (a Honda Insight and a Chevy Sonic), and I'm having trouble picking a car seat because I'm afraid we'll have trouble getting it to fit safely (especially in my Sonic). I'd love recommendations from parents with experience getting car seats into compact cars!
@kamikazezoomy I managed to fit two Graco extend 2 fit 2-in-1s in my Hyundai Elantra before we bought our Honda odyssey. Before that it was one extend 2 fit and one bucket seat. I’ve forgotten which one but it was a standard size.
@kamikazezoomy I have a mini cooper. I can definitely fit a regular bucket seat correctly on the passenger side. And I have a Graco 3 in 1 slim fit that fit fine RF and FF. I’ve also used a graco grow 4 me and another 4 in 1 that fit as well. (Harder to get in and out than the slim fit but still possible) Only issue I’ve found is that sitting in the passenger seat is doable but you’re pretty close to the dashboard (in my car). So it’s probably safest to sit in the backseat if your cars are very compact like mine. But it’s doable! My son is FF now so his seat will go behind the driver seat and the baby will go behind passenger seat.
Those all were ones I was considering in my research, and I think the Mini Cooper is very similar in size inside (if not a little smaller!) than my Sonic, so that's very helpful, thanks! It's also encouraging to hear stories of people keeping small cars after they get kids, I didn't want to have to shop for a new car too lol
@kamikazezoomy no problem!! Yeah I felt super nervous because everyone usually upgrades their cars but I couldn’t so I was glad to find out that it was going to be okay!
@kamikazezoomy yeah we kept ours until we had no choice. It was totaled in a highway accident (not our fault) but it and the car seats kept the kids safe in a rear end crash. We upgraded to the Honda odyssey after that but would have kept the Hyundai longer if we could have. Now on baby three though I would have had no choice. Ha.
