Weekly Theme: Baby Proofing - What are some essentials you need around the house to make it as same as possible for when baby becomes more mobile?

Re: Weekly Panic Thread 11/23

  • Our house is not exactly baby friendly... It was build in 1727 and had an addition put on sometime in the 1800's, so everything is uneven and we have little stairs like everywhere.  We have a couple of pet gates up already to prevent the dogs from going upstairs or getting into the litter boxes/cat food, but I think we're going to need some better options once she's able to move around on her own.  Any suggestions would be appreciated!

  • Getting baby gates for the stairs (we have an open floor plan so I’ll probably get gates to block off rooms/sections of the house!, door knob covers, outlet covers, and cabinet locks. We have a massive coffee table in the living area - will probably have to move it to the corner and leave open space for baby to eventually crawl around. What else am I missing!

panic thread - I keep reading articles/seeing on social media pros and cons of epidurals, pitocin, etc. I feel so unprepared with the classes I’ve taken!
  • I am really thankful that baby won't be moving for a bit lol I will need to baby proof again. Mostly outlets and moving cleaning supplies. My first was really good about staying out of things. He also didn't put much in his mouth. I bet this one will be the opposite lol

My panic: Friday my son ran a fever. The next day it was gone but he has had heavy congestion and low appetite. I figured it was just a little virus but I found it a girl in his class has the flu. You guys. I cannot get the flu the week I'm having this baby 😰. He's day 6 and so far, no symptoms on my end. 🤞🤞🤞

Also got our Christmas all put out and up. That's a big weight off my chest. Our first month of formula arrived 👏👏 got it all organized. I have a mountain of laundry to fold and put away and I would like to get the house straightened up before we go to the hospital next week. Ugh. So much to do!

  • We haven’t even thought much about baby proofing to be honest 😅 I’m still just trying to finish laundry, assemble baby gadgets and pack our hospital bags
  • Baby proofing for newborns is really all about safe sleep. With winter babies thick blankets are probably the biggest thing to consider. Use sleep sacks if you can. Cats always need to be monitored.
Rolling would be the next step. One thing I anecdotally discovered the importance of muscle memory during the first few months. You will be on autopilot. One thing I did was immediately get into the habit of always having a hand on my baby during diaper changes. Newborns aren't rolling anywhere if you turn around to get a new pack of diapers but that changes quickly. Establishing the muscle memory of always having a hand on them (for example if you bend down to get something out of a drawer) will "baby proof" the changing experience later, if that makes sense.
When it comes to baby gates, make sure you get something you can open with one hand, as you will not want to be juggling a crying baby covered in *enter body fluid here* while climbing over something or needing two hands!

  • @booksandicecream great suggestions!! Didn’t think about the baby gate with one hand! That’s a game changer for sure. Not too worried about baby proofing yet but have thought about the mass amount of furniture that we never secured 🤦🏼‍♀️
