January 2024 Moms

When is everyone taking maternity leave?

Hi!

Has anyone started their work leave process yet? I'm having the hardest time deciding what date to give my official notice for my leave. I'm due Jan 11th, but have been hearing about how first time moms are usually about a week late (if not more) I was thinking Jan 1st, to give myself a little time to prepare and still have optimal time at home with baby afterwords....

What's everyone else thinking? Or any 2nd or 3rd time moms out there with any words of wisdom for work leave?

Re: When is everyone taking maternity leave?

  • with my first two I nannyed right ho until birth. with this one, doc told me she will have me off work the entire last month of pregnancy

  • I plan on going to work until I’m in labor! My work is flexible with this, I don’t think I have to pick dates in advance. I’m taking 12 weeks off.
  • I also am going to wait until labor or a possible induction date. HR does want the majority of the FMLA paperwork in before then. I do get 6 weeks paid by the company, but I am not sure I want to go back after this baby...   :|
  • My workplace seems to think I’ll be off in early December (I work in a bakery on my feet all day and I’m due Jan 2) but I would like to work as long as possible. I haven’t looked into the process yet, it seems to be different in Canada vs US.
  • Thanks for the advice all! Now I'm thinking of only taking off a few days before, but may try to swing working from home for the first week of Jan. I work over an hour away from my hospital and terrified of being in labor and stuck in traffic that far away!
  • I am due Jan 10th, i was considering not coming back after the holiday. Or work remote for one week. I wont be retuning until June....I think. But I will need to feel I have comfotably save enough to cover the 3 unpaid months.
  • I am due Jan 23rd. I am a teacher in Canada so I won’t come back after Christmas break. Jan 9th will be the start of my leave, I’ll do the 1 yr leave and then I can extend my parental leave so I will return to work the following January but only 3 days a week.
  • Due January 29th and Canadian.

My work shuts down after December 16th until January 2nd. I am hoping to work from home for 2 more weeks but not counting on it so willing to get sick leave for the month prior to starting Maternity for the 12 months.
  • Wow! Jealous of the Canadian leave. Is some of it paid? I only have so many sick  days to use and can't afford to stay on leave far after those days are up
  • The entire thing is paid (55% of your salary) but some companies choose to add to that amount for expecting mothers. We also have the option of 12 months or 18 months of leave however it is the same amount of salary I believe that is spread across the extra 6 months.
  • Jan 14th due date.
I was thinking of stopping one month before, l work in the hospital with long hours on my feet. Rather be home for the holidays…I’m thinking of staying home for 6 mths and only working part time (2 days per week) when I get back.
  • I’m due January 12th and my maternity leave start December 22nd. Planning to go back to work in March with reduced hours (25-30) per week until ready to return full time.
  • I am due January 15th and I am planning to work till Jan 10. Will take 11 months off and go back to work in December ( Canadian here :) )
  • I'm due Jan 18th and plan to work until Jan 12th as long as I'm feeling well enough since I work from home. I'll take my 8 weeks. Then I get 6 additional weeks of bonding time I'll take in week increments for the rest of the year (all paid 100%). Wishing all of u healthy pregnancies and deliveries!!!
  • Due Jan 29, I'm planning on talking to my OB about starting leave at 35/36 weeks mainly because I'm already exhausted, and I don't have the time or energy to do work and home stuff, let alone prep anything for the baby. Plus that would put me off work right about Christmas. My work does 6 weeks short-term disability at 60% pay and 8 weeks parental bonding leave at 100% which is pretty good for the US, but you have to pay back the bonding leave money if you don't come back to work for 90 days post-leave. Which I don't intend to do, so yeah
  • Also a Canadian teacher here! I'm due January 29 and am planning to go back after the holidays and work at least a week. That'll give me 2 weeks off before due date.

It sucks for work and the kids that I'm only going back for a week, but I don't want my mat leave to start way back in December when we go in winter break. Love and am grateful for our (pretty much) paid year of mat leave. We get full pay for I think 8 weeks, and then 80%?
  • I get 5 weeks paid but using all my sick days

Then I'll take 2 weeks unpaid

Definitely wanted more time but that's the current system here 😞
