AMA Check-in November

This is a thread for all the expecting mamas who will be 35+ when their babies are born.

1. Age Now / Age at Delivery
2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA?
3. How are you feeling?
4. Has your doctor/midwife mentioned AMA to you? Will there be any AMA specific testing/visits/ultrasounds?

Re: AMA Check-in November

  • 1. Age Now / Age at Delivery - 38 / Most likely 39

    2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA? STM and ST as AMA

    3. How are you feeling? Tired. Anxious to get to 12 weeks because I just feel more secure once I hit that threshold.

    4. Has your doctor/midwife mentioned AMA to you? Will there be any AMA specific testing/visits/ultrasounds? No one has mentioned anything and my last pregnancy I had to bring it up haha (and they were kind of like we just have to put that, but its not a big deal). They give every pregnant woman a packet that includes a schedule so there's not real discussion of the extra testing beyond reviewing that. I'll be getting NIPT a week from tomorrow (which is recommended AMA and covered by insurance, but I think you can still opt out - I'm not though, I love information). And then bonus ultrasounds at 32 weeks, 36 weeks, and weekly starting at 37 weeks.

  • 1. Age Now / Age at Delivery: 39/39
    2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA? Fourth, 2nd AMA but I was barely 35 with my last
    3. How are you feeling? Horrible. I am exhausted and nauseous. I don’t like this part of pregnancy at all.
    4. Has your doctor/midwife mentioned AMA to you? Will there be any AMA specific testing/visits/ultrasounds? I have my first appointment with my midwives next week so I’m going to see what the plan is. I tend to run more anxious, and I want the extra monitoring plus the option to induce early, so I may switch to an OB if that’s not offered at my midwife clinic. But I am hoping I don’t have to change clinics because I loved my experiences with this midwife group previously.
  • @jenEP I was with a midwife group for my first 2 and with my first they did an amazing induction, so it’s definitely possible. I hope you can get what you want with a provider you feel comfortable with!

    1. Age Now / Age at Delivery: 40/41
    2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA? TTM, was also AMA for #2
    3. How are you feeling? So tired. Not sure what I thought was going to happen being pregnant at 40, but I am completely exhausted.
    4. Has your doctor/midwife mentioned AMA to you? Will there be any AMA specific testing/visits/ultrasounds? I heard plenty about my age while we were working with the RE trying to get pregnant. My regular OBGYN is a rather direct “tell it to you straight” kinda doctor, so I’ll be curious what she has to say next week. With #2 it was barely mentioned, except to say that our NIPT was fully covered. I was also only 36 then, which feels a lot different than over 40.
  • 1. Age Now / Age at Delivery 35/36
    2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA? 6th TM, 1st AMA
    3. How are you feeling? All day nausea. It's a busy time and Im exhausted pretending I'm feeling normal, since it's to early to share the news.
    4. Has your doctor/midwife mentioned AMA to you? Will there be any AMA specific testing/visits/ultrasounds? Haven't had an appointment yet.

    1. Age Now / Age at Delivery
39, age at delivery also 39.

    2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA?
    FTM!
    3. How are you feeling?

Biggest symptoms so far are fatigue, some brain fog, and food aversions. I’m a software engineer and it’s been especially difficult to concentrate on my work. I’m just so wiped all the time.

    4. Has your doctor/midwife mentioned AMA
    to you?

my gynecologist mentioned it before I got pregnant, and recommended seeing an obstetrician instead of a midwife at my clinic. Though I have no health risks, so when I see the obstetrician for the first time in 2 weeks, she might decide that it’s unnecessary.

Will there be any AMA specific testing/visits/ultrasounds?
I’m definitely getting screened for chromosomal disorders. Not sure about the rest - I haven’t read up on all the possible tests you can get.

  • Age Now / Age at Delivery: 41/42 will be 42 on Thanksgiving.
    2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA?: 4th time mom 2nd ama
    3. How are you feeling?: I am actually feeling good
    4. Has your doctor/midwife mentioned AMA to you? Will there be any AMA specific testing/visits/ultra: My doctor doesn't actually like the term ama he goes by each person and determines what they specifically need. He says that if you are having a healthy pregnancy with no complications he doesn't do more test just because of the age. I was 37 with my 3rd and I saw him every 4 weeks until 36 weeks and then every week after that which was only two weeks.

  • I had my appointment with my midwife yesterday. Since I’m not yet 40 (I’ll be 2 months shy), she said she they don’t treat it any differently than my prior pregnancies since I’m otherwise low risk. She did say I can do an induction at 40 weeks and potentially try for a few days before my due date if they have openings. It sounds like it’s a hospital policy that you can’t have an elective induction before 40 weeks (unless you’re 40+), so even if I changed providers I might not get a 39 week induction. I also won’t have any extra appointments or monitoring unless I want it, in which case she’s happy to see me more frequently. If something comes up, like GD or blood pressure issues, she said they’ll change course as needed. I’m feeling good about everything so I’m going to stick with this midwife group.
  • @jenEP I’m glad you’re feeling good about your choice. Have people you trust is so important.

I went for my first appt with the regular OBGYN today and she said something similar. I’m already 40, but because I’m healthy and generally low risk she isn’t advising anything extra, except a low dose baby aspirin (which I was already on from the RE anyway). She did say I can expect weekly non stress tests at the end because they watch older women more closely near delivery time. I got referred out to MFM because you can’t do NIPT with the vanishing twin situation, so we will have a little extra monitoring with them, but that’s unrelated to my age.
  • 1. Age Now / Age at Delivery

35 now, will be 36 when I deliver.

    2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA?

    First baby.

    3. How are you feeling?

nauseous & exhausted!!!! I also just had a subchorionic hematoma/hemorrhage that was super scary and landed us a visit to the ED. Still a little tender from that but had my first pregnancy appointment the day after and received all good news.

    4. Has your doctor/midwife mentioned AMA to you? Will there be any AMA specific testing/visits/ultrasounds?

Yes, and she did so in a very jovial manner though said there is science to the interventions. Placenta apparently starts to age more quickly. So more scans and likely would want to be inducing around 39 weeks.
  • 1. Age Now / Age at Delivery 34/35

    2. FTM / STM+? If STM+, is this your first AMA? third

    3. How are you feeling? I go through bouts of feeling awful, then feeling okay. I've had some uncomfortable bloating this week.

    4. Has your doctor/midwife mentioned AMA to you? Will there be any AMA specific testing/visits/ultrasounds? yes, she said I'll have extra ultrasounds and stress tests during the last month.
