Breast redness?

Hi, popping in from the April board… I’m due 4/5 but will deliver in March due to a previous complicated c-section. Anyway! Has anyone experienced breast redness? The lower half of my breasts are very red and it’s freaking me out because all google says is inflammatory breast cancer. Can’t find anything anywhere that says this is a normal pregnancy thing. Just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat. I plan to bring it up to my OB at next week’s appointment.

Re: Breast redness?

  • Wow talk about timing! YES! I freaked myself out so much thinking I had IBC from googling. I just had an appt this week and brought it up, and my OB said it's completely normal. Our skin gets more sensitive when we're pregnant and redness is common. My skin was already pretty sensitive pre-pregnancy, and the redness started right where my underwire was win contact with the bottomn of my breasts on my bra. I had been holding off on getting a new bra until the last possible second, so it was too small and digging in a little.

Still mention it at your appt, but my OB said benadryl might help. I have started wearing nursing bras that are much looser and I've noticed a little bit of improvement.

  • Thanks so much for the reply! Is your redness just in the crease where the underwire meets the skin, or on your bottom half of breast as well? Mine isn’t in the crease, it’s my actual lower half of breasts that are all red. I too have sensitive skin in general but this is just weird! Going to look into some looser comfy bras to see if it helps, I only wear sports bras lately but they’ve become very tight.
  • My breasts were like this in my first pregnancy/post partum. The entire underside was red and unpleasant feeling. Eventually it became an entire mass of stretch marks. It was really kind of horrifying how ugly it got under there :( but better than cancer! I would bring it up to your doctor, but it's probably just skin stretching or rubbing on your now tight bras.
  • It's not in the crease under my breasts, it's on the bottom half of my breasts under my nipples. Sounds like the exact same place as yours. It's definitely a relief to know other people experienced this too!

I noticed that it also looks better in the morning (after I've slept with no bra on for 8 hours) but then it's pretty red again after I get home from work and take my bra off. That clued me in to probably being from my bra and not cancer 🙈 my husband also made the point that it could be from the extra weight because my boobs have gotten heavier/bigger since becoming pregnant. It's really the perfect storm lol
  • Thanks so much for the input ladies! It does put my mind at ease a bit. I think there’s just a lot going on inside my boobs right now lol I’ve also been getting sharp shooting pains in both of them which is not the soreness I experienced in the first trimester. I read around 16 weeks is when you start producing milk and that’s where I’m at so I’m wondering if that has something to do with everything going on. They feel a bit fuller than they were too.
