Anyone else gain weight super fast during first trimester?

edited October 2023 in May 2024 Moms
Hey ladies,
This is my 10th pregnancy (2 miscarriages) and every time I gain like 5-7 lbs super fast in my first trimester.  It’s so frustrating and doesn’t matter at all how I eat or exercise. I’m about 99% sure it’s bloating and digestive backup, which sucks.  So if you’re in the same boat, you’re not alone. I struggle with the scale when I’m not pregnant, so this is always a mental battle every pregnancy.

(not sure why my username isn’t reflecting properly….shouldn't be a “nottie…” name)

  • Thanks for sharing! I actually haven't really gained yet, but only just now at the 8 week mark. I'm actually shocked because with the bloating and constipation I feel and look (to me anyway) like I'm gaining. The skinny jeans are feeling extra tight and my bras are digging in and not fitting properly.

I was out of town this last week and did not have a scale and was feeling a lot of guilt about it. Because I know right now it's not a baby popping my stomach out, it's just me!

  • Umm yes this is me!! I weighed in the other day at the doctors and it wasn’t as “bad” as I thought. Hoping to be making better food choices in second tri and become more active again - honestly the first tri has been about survival for me so trying to give myself some grace.
  • Me!! I do too! Since snacking helps me to not vomit, I snack often. Plus the fact I can only eat fast food. I always gain about 10lbs in the first trimester. Which sucks! But honestly the rest of the time I gain pretty slowly so it always evens out in the end. Once I can start walking, eating veggies, and doing light workouts again, I’ll be good as new.
  • Hi ladies! This is also me and I’m struggling mentally. I have always struggled with my weight and I was hoping that I wouldn’t gain that much my first trimester.I’ve already gained 4 pounds and feel so bloated. Im 9 1/2 weeks. I’m feeling depressed. I’m nauseas all the time and only feel like eating comfort food.
  • Talk to your doctor about nausea. Mine prescribed me diclegis and it’s been night and day.

Hide the scale and eat what you’re able until you’re yourself again. I’ve put on more weight than expected too, but I’m not concerned as I know I’ll take extra walks and be back in the fresh veg when I’m feeling better. For now it is what it is.
