Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding help!!!

First time mom! My son will be 1 on the 27th and is still fully breastfeeding… I never did a bottle or formula. I am also expecting baby #2 in April! This past month I have been trying to introduce bottle and formula - I feel so helpless… I waited to long to introduce bottle and now I don’t know what to do.. I need suggestions/ advice if anyone has been through this same situation… I feel my supply has dropped and I’ve tried to pump but I’m barely getting any let alone enough for one bottle … I really hope there is someone who can help!!!

Re: Breastfeeding help!!!

  • He's at an age where he can start trying solids. I wouldn't bother trying to figure out a bottle with formula. I'd recommend offering him a sippy cup with water until he gets the hang of using it. Then you can start offering him whole milk.

  • Hi there, aspiring Lactation Consultant here and mum of three.

Wow way to go mama, what an achievement breastfeeding up until one! And congratulation on your (very near) baby, how exciting.

It sounds like you’ve been having a bit of a tough time lately, trying to get your son onto a bottle. It can be frustrating can’t it! Have you tried breastfeeding at the start of a feed, and then slipping the teat of the bottle into his mouth after a little bit? It can be helpful to do this during an evening or night feed when he’s very relaxed. Great suggestion about a small cup too, you could offer him breastmilk in this too.

Regarding your milk supply, it sounds like you’re trying really hard to keep your supply up, and that can feel quite stressful can’t it! What is your son’s diet like? If he has begun solid food, your milk supply will begin to decrease as your breasts work on supply and demand. As he is getting more of his nutrients from solid foods, he won’t require as much breastmilk. Our bodies are amazing with knowing what our babies need!

    Hi lovely!

When I had my first child, Pigeon bottles were highly recommended to us and thankfully it has worked well! My daughter had taken it right away, no issues unlike other bottles we've tried. The teat is so soft and flexible which I found great for breastfed babies like her. And so I didn't think twice about using Pigeon bottles again for my second child who by the way just recently turned 1 and 3 months!

And I thought I'd share this article, might help guide you on transitioning your little one from breastfeeding to bottle.

Good luck and have lots of patience!
