Breastfeeding

Milk supply decreasing

I am 11 months pp and all of a sudden my milk supply is dropping. Same pumping schedule, nothing at all has changed. Tried power pumping, extra sessions, meditation, supplements, changing all parts, and nothing seems to work. I used to get 24 ounces a day and now I'm down to about 18. Could it just be hormones? Any suggestions anyone? Thank you.

Re: Milk supply decreasing

  • I read that the milk changes so it’s less amount but has more nutrients now. However I too had that drop! It’s scary huh? Idk I just imagined I would breast feed until I decide I would stop. I reached to friends for advice and they had all told me they had the same problem & by 6 months their bodies didn’t produc milk anymore.

However I called Kaiser for lactation help and they told me we need to be drinking about 138 oz of water if not more a day! So drink double. So instead of 6-8 glasses of 8oz a day it’s 14-16 of 8oz a day. None of my friends knew that! Another thing it’s apparently normal at this time when baby seems to have a progression or change! For me one day my baby for 7 days straight wouldn’t stop crying unless I was holding her, she seemed so hungry all day I had her to the breast. I called lactation they told me baby and mama need a “baby moon “ for a few days. It’s pretty much u and baby in the bed attached to each other for a few days Bc she’s asking your body for more milk that she needs with her growth spurt.

If you have any tips by now let me know ! Hope it’s back up for u

  • Hi there, I am a Lactation Counselor in-training and mom of two. I understand how challenging that must feel for your supply to feel like it is suddenly dropping. From what you wrote, it sounds like your baby must be coming up at 1 year old. That is so exciting! And what an incredible achievement you have made breastfeeding your baby this far. So, it sounds like you have tried lots of great ideas. What does your baby's diet look like? At this age, babies are eating a variety of different foods and taking in less milk than they were before. Breastfeeding is a supply-and-demand system, so less demand (because baby is eating more food) means less milk. It can feel stressful when our milk supplies change, but making sure you are getting plenty to eat and drink as well is important. "Baby moon" is a great idea as well: excellent bonding time between you and baby and a great opportunity to bring your baby more to your breast to increase that supply-and-demand system. I hope this helps!!
