February 2024 Moms

Hello! I had some concerns regarding my appetite. Care to chime in?

First time mom to be here!

I originally thought I was 2 months pregnant. At the beginning of the second month when I found out I was hungry all the time. Had multiple snacks to where it didn’t feel like it was enough sometimes. I’m currently ending my first trimester and my appetite the last three weeks have been low. I feel nausea here and there. I read that a candy might do the trick and that or a glass of cold water helps a lot but doesn’t help me become hungry. I have been forcing yogurts, and fruits throughout the day. I for sure try to have at least a breakfast and dinner meal. But it worries me that nothing seems to sound good or taste good enough to open my appetite.
Anyone else with similar issues? I’d appreciate any comments or suggestions:)

  • Also FTM, but my OB told me that some women actually lose weight in the first trimester because of nausea, etc. She also recommended lots of little meals instead of the main three, which might make it easier if you have a small appetite. Probably something to bring up with your doctor if you start your second trimester and can't eat 200-300 calories more than non-pregnancy per day. I could hardly eat dinner for weeks 7-12, but it's gotten a lot better as T1 ended and T2 starts. I didn't gain anything during my first trimester, and doc said that's fine. Still turning to soda water if the nausea feels like it's coming back. Hope that helps!

  • Thanks for the response!
I have also found the soda water and a splash of lemonade does wonders.
I was looking at my visits and it seems like during my second and third month I lost like 2 pounds. So it might just be that…the lose weight thing.
I definitely am keeping tabs on how much I am eating because it doesn’t seem like enough but if I buy something I am craving for dinner I eat it whole, it’s the morni mg and lunch time that is particularly difficult.
    Anyway thanks!
  • I want to share my story, which seems quite unconventional. During my pregnancy, morning sickness made me feel far from my best. Many people talk about pregnancy as a time of boundless appetite, but I was repulsed by food. Morning sickness even made everyday foods seem unbearable. I tried various strategies, but at that time, my main goal was simply to overcome this challenging period.  https://www.bestweddingveil.com/choice-wedding-underwear-bride In the third trimester, I feel better and my appetite has returned with renewed vigor. However, my body has accumulated a lot of extra weight by this point. This brings about mixed feelings: the joy of being able to enjoy food again, while also worrying about how I will be perceived.

  • Same here, I can be dying from hunger.... Then it's literally 2 bites and I'm full.
  • How is your hunger and appetite now that it has been a month?
I suffered from HG in my previous pregnancy and due to aversions, vomiting, and nausea all day everyday until about 18-20wks, overall I lost 20lbs putting me underweight for BMI before I started gaining. This time my nausea started at 5 weeks and vomiting, food aversions, smell aversions, and no appetite followed close behind. I would literally vomit or cry about the thought of having to eat. None of the things like ginger, Benadryl, Unisom & B6 work for me. I had to be on prescription meds for vomiting for a while before I slowly worked up being able to eat more frequent small meals. I worked my way from very bland or very cold things like toast and added a bit of jam eventually to chocolate malts or popsicles and ice water to other foods like pasta with butter and light seasoning or a bit of sauce or super basic quesadillas with just cheese to now adding chicken and veggies to them. At 16 weeks now I’m able to take the minimum dose of my meds and eat most foods however I still have aversions and if I get too hungry all bets are off so I keep peanut butter crackers with me, clif bars, a small container of fruit, etc with me to snack on if it’s been a while since I’ve eaten to hold me over…I snack more these days than my 2 year old who is the queen of snacking!
My ob told me at 8 weeks eating something is better than nothing and that she once had a patient who basically sustained herself on vanilla ice cream her first 15 weeks because that was all she could stomach and keep down most days.
