Hello! Has anyone ever had experience with going to a fetal echo exam during pregnancy? I’m going as a precaution next week because apparently IVF babies are more prone to heart defects. Would love to hear others experience at this appointment and what to expect!
Re: IVF Mom— fetal echo exam
try not to dwell on the cited complications associated with IVF pregnancies- in terms of cardiac defects, the latest studies show that it’s a negligible increase in cardiac issues for IVF babes compared to non-IVF babes. Many prominent IVF docs also think the original study that cited a 2% vs 1% increase in cardiac defects for IVF babies to not be a great study.
Also- to answer your questions, expect to be with an ultrasound tech around 30-45 minutes (it was pretty long!) they will place a probe over your abdomen in the same manner that a typical ultrasound is conducted. You will most likely speak to the pediatric cardiologist reading the echo before you leave your appt for the day (they will usually always “sign off” on the echo before the ultrasound tech finishes the exam). I was nervous and felt it took a while, but learned that it’s so dependent on the baby’s position and getting all of the images they need and it can take a while!
