2nd Trimester

I can’t sleep

I have been suffering from some major pregnancy insomnia as well as discomfort when laying down. Before being pregnant I was a stomach sleeper but it’s way too uncomfortable now. I can fall asleep generally pretty easy but will wake up after a couple hours and just be exhausted but “wide awake” for 1-3 hours every night. And when when this is not happening, I keep waking up to pain in whichever hip I’m laying on. I’ve tried pillows between my legs and I’ve tried the pregnancy pillows and although they help my back, I always wake up with migraines from them (I have to use certain pillows normally because my neck hates me and gives me migraines often-this is an all my life thing, not a pregnancy thing).

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get comfortable or stay asleep? Help a tired girl out!

Re: I can’t sleep

  • Have you tried Unisom? That has helped me a lot!

  • I am in this same boat right now. 19 weeks and 2 days. I am awake every day between 2/3a.m-5:30a.m. Usually up to pee then can’t fall asleep but this week have been in unbearable pain in my hips. I switch side to side and after about 10 minutes my hip hurts then go to the other side and that hip hurts. Have you found ANY particular pillow that works?
  • Same thing happened to me. Around 23 weeks now I have been waking up at 5.30 am now. It gets better on its own
  • My physical therapist showed me how to do a hamstring nerve glide and it almost completely solved the problem! Every once in a while the pain will come back, I’ll do the nerve glide on both sides and it’s gone! I do it right before bed. YouTube a hamstring nerve glide and see if it helps you!
  • Did you find a pillow that works!! I got mine at the end of July and it was like $30 on Amazon, 5.5ft long basically a giant circle so I can switch back and forth from side to side and still have something between my legs. Sadly it didn't help my insomnia but my back/pelvis/ribs/neck have all thanked me for it.
  • Magnesium helps me sleep at night, as well as restless leg syndrome.
  • Between finding a comfy position and this relentless hip pain, I'm at my wits' end. 😩
  • Oh, I totally relate! I experienced the same when I was pregnant. One home remedy that helped me was drinking a cup of warm Relaxing Mama tea before bedtime. It's gentle and helped me relax. For the hip pain, I used to massage it gently with lavender essential oil diluted in coconut oil. It provided some relief. Wishing you restful nights ahead! 💤🌸
