3rd Trimester

Unhealthy Eating - Feeling guilty :(

Anyone else not been eating great throughout their pregnancy? I’m 32 weeks and I’m starting to feel really guilty the closer I get, and worried that I’ve done some damage to my baby.

I’ve always managed to get in healthy foods (eggs, nuts, spinach smoothies, my prenatals etc) but I know I’ve gone way overboard on junk food (especially sugar).

Surprisingly, I haven't gained a ton of weight. 21 lbs so far. And no gestational diabetes and still have low blood pressure.

What are the chances my poor diet has done some damage to baby? I keep hearing “babies are resilient” but is that really true?

Re: Unhealthy Eating - Feeling guilty :(

  • I’m almost 35 weeks and I really at this point believe that pregnancy can be super tough for some women and if you eat anything at all you’re lucky to keep it down. My first trimester I was so sick I don’t think I ate a vegetable until 18 weeks. The second I rebounded and definitely had a better diet. Now I flip flop between eating well and poorly, ie: ice cream, salads, potatoes, pizza pops. Just as my symptoms flip flop - nausea, low energy, feeling good, heartburn. I just think women for centuries before us managed to have humans, and we’ve got a ton more information and support and if what you need is a tub of Ben and Jerry’s then do it. Babies get what they need, and we do the best we can. Be kind and compassionate with yourself. You’re growing a human and giving up your body to do it.

  • Babies are good at taking what they need. Usually it’s the mother that ends up lacking nutrients due to it. Your prenatal should cover most of the nutrients baby need.
