Suggestions for how to tell work!

Hi all,

I’m looking for some advice. I started a new job on the 10th of July and I’m wondering when/how I should tell them. I didn’t know I was pregnant when I signed my job offer and I worked a long notice period at my previous place. Today should be 13w 5d, due date Jan 21st and this is my first.

I’m leaning towards telling them soon but my direct supervisor is on vacation until August. I don’t really know these people at all and feel like it will be a really awkward conversation. I feel like if I tell them sooner I can stop stressing about their reactions but at the same time I won’t really have had any time to prove myself!

What should I do?

Re: Suggestions for how to tell work!

  • Do you work remote or in an office? If people aren’t seeing you from the shoulders down it can be easier to hide. I’m in a similar situation but I started in March. I waited until I had a couple significant projects that I’ve completed but then told as soon as I could — I wanted to be able to have the ability to claim the protection of the new law that provides special accommodations for doctors appts, relaxed schedules as needed, etc.

Currently in office but was told I could go remote once I’m done my training. Which I think I’m done, it’s not been made very clear and with my supervisor away I have no-one to ask.
  • Why would you tell them? I think the obvious answer is you don't tell them, they'll figure it out eventually. Unless you're work performance is impacted by your pregnancy there isn't any need to tell them (like if your job requires heavy lifting or working around chemicals).
