3rd Trimester

Should I go to the ER

So first, my doctor always says "it never hurts to go to the ER if it will make me feel better", which is why I want another opinion.

I am about 34 weeks pregnant and so far everything is normal, but I am labeled high risk due to a previous miscarriage and my weight. Last night I didn't feel him move at all which I can only recall ever happening once before. The internet constantly says any change in movement warrants a trip to triage.  I check the heart rate this morning and it is still in the normal range ( maybe a bit higher for him than typical but still fine) since this morning he has been moving, but I don't know if it makes sense to get checked just to be SURE.

I feel like I'm going crazy...should I go to triage?

  • If you’re concerned you can also call the nurse line. If you aren’t getting a good kick count drink some water, eat a chocolate or something with some sugar and lie on your left side and see if you get anything.

  • If you are concerned it's always best to call the nurses line 1st.  Honestly if baby is moving you are fine.  Do remember the sleep also.  They are running out of space and once engaged the movement becomes more minimal - at least for me.
  • Are you doing kick counts? As in, same time every day, timing how long it takes to get 10 movements (of any intensity, and not just kicks)? If not, start. That way you have the data to see if there actually was a significant change. I used the Count The Kicks app, it includes stories of babies who were saved by this kind of data.

You mentioned you checked heart rate, how? Are you using a home Doppler? If so, I'd absolutely stop that. Babies have died in exactly this kind of situation - mom is worried (usually due to reduced movement), gets out the home Doppler and reassures herself the heartbeat is normal so she doesn't go in, and by the time her worries outweigh the reassurance of the Doppler, she goes in only to find it's too late to save the baby.

Kick counts are the most reliable way to tell at home if baby is okay. If you're worried, call your doctor's on call number- that may feel better for you if you're on the fence. Most doctors are pretty conservative, so if there's a question they'll probably tell you to go in, and if the hospital questions you, you have the doctor recommendation to back you up. And they'll usually tell you to go to labor and delivery, not the ER.
