Breast Pump

How did you choose the best breast pump to get? Any suggestions?

Re: Breast Pump

  • I read through a bunch of forums like this (also check Reddit, it's a lot more active), paying particular attention to moms who tried 2 or more pumps and could compare. Madela and Spectra are most loved, and when put head-to-head, I saw more moms prefer Spectra. BUT, there are other factors: what does your insurance cover? Do you need wearable (if so, you also want a stronger traditional pump)? Do you need it to be rechargeable or can it plug in? How many parts will you need to wash?

I have a Spectra S2 and Zomee Z2. Zomee is much smaller and rechargeable, but doesn't remove as much milk and has so many parts to wash! My Spectra is great but I'm tethered to a wall. I'm going to get a car adapter for pumping on the,go, but I really should've paid more for the S1 (rechargeable). My insurance didn't cover the S1, but I know I'll have to pump in the car when I go back to work and I'm not sure the car adapter is going to cut it. Neither are wearable, so I can't really hold baby while I pump.

  • Agree that you should look into what your insurance covers. However, even if your insurance doesn't fully cover the pump you want know that many times you can "upgrade" by paying a little more out of pocket. That said, I personally have three breast pumps - the Spectra S1, the Elvie wearable pump, and the Lansinoh manual pump. I use and love all three for very different reasons. If I had to choose just one though, I would recommend the Spectra S1. It is a double electric breast pump but has a built in rechargeable battery so I can move throughout the house. I wrote a blog post about each of these pumps and why I chose them if you want to check it out https://itsmommode.com/blog/all-about-breast-pumps. Hope that helps you!
