What do I pack for a day train trip?

Hello everyone! We are planning a day train trip with our JUST 3-year-old boy… and I’m at lost at what I will need to know to pack for him. Does anyone have suggestions? The Amtrack website doesn’t give a very clear list of what to inspect and so I really don’t know what to pack. I’ve never been on a train before, so any of you who have been on a train or have a better idea of what a 3 year old boy may need would be really helpful!

Thank you!

  • I would definitely pack any toys he loves to play with - they should be small because you usually do not have too much space on a train. It is not possible to take a stroller to your seat on the train because the passages can be too small - there is a compartmet where you can store your stroller. Many trains have some kind of restaurants or "shops" on board where you can buy food and drinks but they are usually very expensive so I would definitely take enough food for the trip. My children usually prefer finger foods instead of sandwiches. My children usually take their portable DVD players or tablets where they are playing games or watching some episodes of their favorite films. We could charge all our electronic devices on the train.

  • Thank you so much for responding!!
  • I’d pack like you’re going on a long flight: snacks, water bottle, a few favorite toys or books, and maybe an iPad with headphones if he’ll sit still for a show. Trains are roomy, so he might want to walk around a bit too!
  • We brought some fidget toys, snacks, and a mini travel pillow for naps. Also, pack a trash bag or ziplock for random trash. And I liked having hand sanitizer and wipes since the bathrooms can get a bit rough.

We did a train trip with our toddler not long ago and it was a great adventure. Definitely pack plenty of snacks (the kind that don’t crumble everywhere!), a water bottle, wipes, a change of clothes (just in case), and a few small toys or books he loves. Sticker books or magnetic drawing boards work wonders. Also, don’t forget a cozy blanket or stuffed animal for naps, since trains can get chilly. Download a few shows or games to your phone/tablet just in case you need a quiet moment. Also, if you're planning to combine your train trip with a flight or need to compare travel options, don’t forget to contact cheapoair—they’ve got some great deals and make it easy to sort through travel choices when you’re juggling a family itinerary.
