1st Trimester

Is this a chemical pregnancy?

On Wednesday I got a faint positive. Thursday morning my digital test was positive and my line test was much darker, however I started to bleed.
Bleeding lasted all day Thursday, Friday and today, however it seems to be fluctuating (sometimes a lot, sometimes not much).
I took two more tests this morning, which was 48hrs since my last test, and the lines were a bit lighter.
The most confusing part is that I’ve still had strong pregnancy symptoms through all this, feeling very nauseous and almost puking a few times. I also haven’t had any pain/cramping.
I have had a miscarriage before, where I had very painful cramps and tons of blood…so all of this has me very confused!

Re: Is this a chemical pregnancy?

  • You could have a subchronic hematoma,  if you had sex and irritated the cervix it can cause bleeding.  Some people bleed for no reason - some through entire pregnancy.

The darkness of a line means nothing.  Except the amount of dye that was in the test.  It cannot detect a chemical pregnancy. Potential miscarriage. Etc.

It would be great for you to talk to your doctor if concerned of the bleeding.

Bleeding is so stressful, it’s hard not to overthink every possible outcome! Unfortunately my Drs office won’t be open until Wednesday, but I’ll be calling for sure :)
  • How far along would you be? I disagree with harpseal on the fact that a pregnancy test can’t detect a chemical pregnancy. If you got a dark line and then took another test 48 or more later and got a super faint line, it’s clear the HCG is going down. Especially if you’re someone testing early at 7-12 DPO. I was able to determine that I was having a chemical because my line went from dark to light and then a negative test within a week. At a certain point the line means nothing because you have so much HCG in your system that each test will show a line based on the amount of dye available in that particular test. There is also the hook effect to consider.
  • Same as @emeraldcity603 I have had 2 chemicals and both times my early positive went back faint very quickly until I started bleeding heavily. And my symptoms continued until my hcg was zero.
  • So I would be about 5.5 weeks now. The bleeding has been a little on the lighter side now, and I actually got a test yesterday morning that was slightly darker again. So maybe it’s possible that all the water I’ve been drinking has been affecting my results? I still haven’t had any cramping either.
    it’s all very confusing🥴
I’ll definitely be seeing a doctor this week!

I hope seeing the doc gives some answers! I was able to tell about my chemical as well with the strip tests. They started to get lighter and I started to get pms symptoms. I also had a chemical or very early mc in February and the line just stalled. I never got a “dye stealer”. With my first pregnancy it took about 10 days to get one (but every person is different!) and in February it never got there. hCG confirmed with a decrease. Honestly the waiting is the worst part for me. Once I had an answer, even with the bad news, my mental health felt better. Wishing you the best!
  • Thank you! I agree, the waiting sucks😣
  • At 5.5 weeks I wouldn’t look at the darkness of the tests to determine if something is going wrong. I would meet with your provider. They can get you in for an early US at 6 weeks and see what’s going on.
  • Yeah I really need to stop testing before I go crazy. Thanks to everyone for all the info though, I appreciate it!
