TW - has anyone had a cerclage?

I had to for an emergency cerclage yesterday at 18w3d. Scary stuff. I was 1cm dilated and my cervix was 2.4 cm with no cramps or pain, just bleeding. My OB seems optimistic that there won’t be any issues till 36 weeks but I’m unsure. She says bed rest isn’t needed and I should keep walking & gently working out so that’s encouraging.

Has anyone had this procedure successfully? Or even partially or even non-successfully? I just would like to hear people’s experiences since there doesn’t seem to be a lot of good research.

  • *lurking*
My mom had a cerclage placed when she was pregnant with me 30+ years ago and also got one when she was pregnant with my sister. She was able to carry on regular daily activities, but she could not have intercourse her entire pregnancy. (You may want to ask your doctor about that: not sure if precautions have changed since then.) Her water broke the night before her scheduled CS with me and it didn't cause any issues.
I hope the cerclage helps you!

  • 2.4 is short, so it’s completely funneled and dilating? I had a similar thing happen with my first at 23 weeks, bleeding, first cervix length check was 2 cm then a few days later it was 0.5cm and mildly dilated. It was too late for cerclage so I did bed rest and progesterone vaginally. I was in the hospital on mag for a week. I did deliver at term. I’ve found that sex causes labor for me so we do have to have pelvic rest during my pregnancies (sorry if tmi). I assume you saw a perinatologist? It’s very scary, I’m sorry you’re going through it :(
  • I saw my regular OB who also did the cerclage in the hospital. No perinatalogist.  She didn’t say there was there any funneling and it was 1 cm dilated. She also didn’t say there were any membranes visible. I had no contractions or pain, just bleeding.

I’m on pelvic rest too (poor hubs) 😜 but allowed to resume normal activities, although taking it easy with no heavy lifting or long times on my feet. My OB said progesterone is t really helpful after 12 weeks….🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks for the support! It is very scary and all I read are scary stories!
