1st IVF round- time off work question (newbie)

Hi, glad I found this board!

My husband and I will be starting our first round of IVF in May. I am a nurse that works 3-4 12 hour shifts a week. How reasonable is it to just take one day off for the ER? And how much time is reasonable to take off for ET? I was hoping to just take off day of ET and day after. I will have to call out sick all these days if I am scheduled to work since my work schedule is already out 2 months in advance.

Thanks for any insight!

Re: 1st IVF round- time off work question (newbie)

  • I took one day for each, which I think is perfectly reasonable. For egg retrieval, my clinic used anesthesia (some don't!), and that and travel time (my clinic was nearly 4 hours away) were the main reason for taking a full day off; I had some light cramping, but it was less than a period. For embryo transfer, the doctor said to "take it easy" for the day, but mostly for our own peace of mind. Going to work that day wouldn't have hurt my chances, but the doctor didn't want me second guessing myself for being active that day if it didn't work. This is definitely a question you can ask your doctor/medical team for their recommendation.
