I’ve been reading my grandfather’s memoir of growing up as an Italian immigrant in upstate NY. I started reading it searching for names! But so many incredible tidbits about my family history stand out to me and I’m so thankful. One thing I learned is that my grandfather had a sister who died at 18m old from croup. She died in my great grandmother’s arms. DS had severe croup twice in his infancy, so I can vividly picture it. The memory of racing him to the hospital for steroids, forcing an oxygen mask over his tiny little face, will be glued in my brain forever. But he got steroids and he could breathe again. To know that his great great aunt died from it makes me so grateful for modern medicine, I’m crying just thinking about the alternative.
@ccmrc143 Wow such interesting history, thank goodness for son was able to have the medicine to help. Amazing to know history, my dad is a typical Vietnam vet, so he is very hush hush about anything in our family especially traumatic. Found out later on that his sibling died when they were 5, don’t know much about it. Just trying to pry it out of my uncles and aunts.
