Work in the first trimester

How are you all handling working? I’ve had such extreme fatigue and morning sickness. Hiding it at work along with surviving the day is dreadful! What is everyone’s experience so far?

Re: Work in the first trimester

  • Ask your doctor for options! My doctor wrote me out my last pregnancy because I was SO sick. This time I’m on medication so doing better, but she made sure to tell me to tell her if I can’t handle it. If you have short term disability that will kick in, and a few states have their own programs. (NY, MA,NJ, CA- there may be more)
medications are really helping this time.

  • I called out of work this morning because of the nausea... so yeaahhhh. 🙃🤣
  • I’m so happy this thread exists!! Makes me feel normal 😅. I’m surviving work. It’s a real struggle. I’m so exhausted that I just want to cancel each day and sleep…I’m a singing teacher, so I need to be totally engaged with the person in front of me and it’s really difficult…I get hot and cold flashes, I’m suddenly starving and nauseous or suddenly my stomach bloats out like crazy 😂 and just so tired. It’s rough…
  • I've told my managers that I'm pregnant but let them know that it'll be a few weeks before I tell family or friends.  My job often requires lifting of 60lbs or more at times. Repetitive lifting of smaller items all day. Walking the full 8 hour day. I found on the cdc's website that it's advised not to lift above 30 lbs so that's what I'm sticking to. It's been really difficult to put my foot down and not do more and I'm feeling alot of pressure to. It's frustrating because I'm physically capable of lifting more but if anything happened with the baby and I wasn't following guidelines,  I don't know if I could forgive myself. I've always been one of the people who does most of the heavy lifting while other, more lazy young workers skip it so now that I'm skipping, no one is doing them and the tasks are going late. It's beyond frustrating.  It's gotten so bad that our department has had meetings over everyone sharing the load. Of course Nothing changes though.
  • You’re doing the right thing for you and baby! Sometimes (although it’s difficult) you gotta put yourself first! And right now is the most important!
  • I really appreciate that. Sorry I worded that from a place of stress and frustration lol I definitely needed to hear that though.
  • I’m fortunate that I work a desk job so I’m not on my feet all day, but do struggle everyday with the nausea while at work. I find that I do anything I can to avoid being physically sick at work that as soon as I get home, I’m throwing up. I haven’t told anyone at work yet and am struggling with knowing when the right time is. I’ve only been at this job for 6 months so I’m not very close with anyone but I have had a previous miscarriage (was working for a different employer at the time), so I’m just worried that something might happen while I’m at work. I’m currently 8 weeks, 5 days along so not sure if I should just wait until I’m safely in the second trimester or not 🤔
  • Fatigue is killing me! I work a desk job so luckily I’m just at my computer most of the day but I’ve only worked here for 2 months and am 7w2d. I have my first appointment tomorrow and so far no one knows I am pregnant except my hubs and my MIL. I don’t know how to tell work (even though my boss is awesome and I work at a very family friendly place). So just hiding the fact that I want to sleep under my desk all day LOL
  • I was lucky with my last pregnancy that it was still early covid, so we were all working from home! This time around I told my OB I wasn't dealing with it, as I had work travel during the 1st trimester, so she prescribed diclegis. I've been on that 2x daily and so far I've had some minor nausea, but better than last pregnancy. Even survived an international work trip last week!
  • I've been so miserable at work but I just started around 4 months ago so I don't have much sick or vacation time. I'm unable to use paid time off until I use up my pto funds, but I would really like to have a babymoon in June and so I'm just struggling through every day. Thankful that I have a desk job and that I havent actually vomited yet. Just nauseus ALL DAY. I hope it gets better soon for us!

I’ve missed like 5 days of work since HG kicked in. I work 3 days a week so it’s been basically one day a week. I’m hoping I’m lucky enough it gets better as time passes, but not seeming that way so far.

  • Oh gosh, I'm so sorry y'all are on this struggle bus, but it is heartening to hear I'm not the only one wondering how I'm going to get through the day. I'm lucky that a large portion of my photography job involves working from home, so I'm able to hermit myself away. But when I have to go on location to photograph something...it literally takes me all day to work myself up to it and phew, it knocks me down. I can feel that my body is older, in a different shape than it was with my past pregnancies, and it is so hard. I get out of breath so easily, I'm nauseous all the time. My doctor did prescribe me Phenergan which I take at bedtime to try to hold off nausea, but it still comes in waves during the day. I've had to call out of some events because I just can't manage. I'm 9 weeks right now and praying that some relief comes in the next 3 weeks or so. Fingers crossed that we all get a reprieve from this soon!
