2nd Trimester

Dinner before glucose test

Hi mamas, I have my glucose test coming up and my doctor said the night before and morning to basically eat only protein and absolutely nothing else with sugar. For those that have done it, what did you make for dinner the night prior?

Re: Dinner before glucose test

  • Baked chicken with asparagus and sautéed mushrooms
Just stay away from very sugary things.

  • I didn’t know I was getting my glucose test so the night before I probably had something carby and the morning of I had frosted mini wheats and I still passed so I don’t think it’s that big of a deal unless your body is having a hard time already processing sugar.
  • I have no idea what I had for dinner the night before. By morning you've probably digested all of it so it wouldn't matter. I know for breakfast in the morning I had an apple (maybe with peanut butter?) and possibly something else - yogurt? It was a small breakfast

  • I had Wendy’s on the way to my glucose test, and it came back normal! Not sugary, but super carby- If your body properly processes sugar it shouldn’t get much higher than normal regardless of what you ate

It doesn't matter, your body should be able to break down sugar regardless of what you ate and when.
  • I can't speak for the test because I was diabetic pre-pregnancy, but dinner the night before shouldn't impact it because your body will have processed all the sugar (carbs) by then. Your blood sugar levels should be "back to normal" (less than 120) 2 hours after a meal. If it stays high much longer than that you will want to seek guidance on how to maintain the levels better. For the morning of, it makes sense to me to have a normal (not too large or small) balanced breakfast. You don't want to "cheat the system" to get a normal result if there is an underlying problem. It seems like a better idea to do what you would normally do, get the results, and learn to manage accordingly for both your health and the baby's. Just food for thought but don't panic... stress actually increases your blood sugar levels and so does a lot of pain. I taking care of yourself you are taking care of your child. Good luck with everything!
