HCG level - should I be concerned?

edited March 2023 in 1st Trimester
Hi everyone -

I found out I was pregnant pretty early - like around 9 DPO. I thought my period began last month on Feb 14, but in reality it was Feb 15-16ish and my cycle is 32 days long on avg making my missed period yesterday, March 17th.

I had my first digital positive on March 12th. On March 14th my doctor ordered a blood test to confirm my pregnancy. My hcg was 22.9. They had me come back on March 16th, it only rose to 28.6.

My primary care doctor called me on 3/17 and told me I was not pregnant / she is unsure because my number is not doubling. That day I took 6 urine tests, all dark positives. My OB is having me watch for signs of miscarriage but we are just monitoring, re testing on Monday. She said primary care was incorrect.

I have had very light spotting just once in the morning the 16th and 17th. My period did not come as due on the 17th.

Should I be concerned? I have a lot of pregnancy symptoms like tender breast’s and headache as well. Got two more positives this AM and a digital positive as well, no period either.

Re: HCG level - should I be concerned?

  • So cycle length has no bearing on HCG levels. If you don’t know date of ovulation, it’s hard to say how far along you really are. That being said, once you get a positive, your HCG should double every 48 hours. Once you get numbers Monday you should get a clearer picture of what’s going on. Unfortunately there’s nothing much more you can do besides wait it out. I’m sorry this is stressful. This is why most practices don’t do early bloodwork or HCG at all unless history warrants because it causes undue stress. A positive pee stick is good enough to confirm pregnancy these days.

Best of luck and I hope you have a good outcome!

  • I know! They did blood work because my urine test was so faint. I really didn’t want to track this closely this early on as I’ve never had a miscarriage and this is my first pregnancy. I can’t sleep and am really stressing out. Has anyone had a positive outcome from this??

Don't diss your PCP! Unless you have had other issues with her.  She was just going by what procedure is and what the labs are showing - so don't be pissed at her.

I hate how the medical field runs all these tests and does the diagnostics too early these days.  Really there is no need for it, unless you have a history.  Even if there is something wrong there is nothing that can be done.

Unless there is a need (previous losses, etc) an ultrasound around 10-12 should be the earliest one should be done.  All the blood work and early scans just cause more anxiety (drives up medical costs padding the medical fields pocjet).

I was upset because the delivery of the result was very unclear and there was no advice given on next steps. My OB had to order the follow up blood work. This is also the second time my PCP has interpreted my lab results in this manner for context. She has also done this to my husband once - we are switching providers.

I am justified to be upset. I called my OB and they said that was not true. It is hard from the standpoint of hearing conflicting interpretation of results.add in rising hormones, this situation isn’t fun. The blood test shouldn’t have been ordered to begin with.

It’s been causing a ton of stress and testing 3 times a day or more.
