1st Trimester

Subchorionic Hematoma

This morning I woke up with a 5cent clot and minor bleeding. Went straight for an ultra sound and Bub 11 weeks 4 day is measuring great but a 17ml subchorionic hematoma was found. My doctor doesn’t seem concerned at all and said I may continue to bleed but it’s ok and doesn’t effect the baby and to continue with my ultrasound that I have at 13 weeks 2 days for an nt scan.
Please share your experiences my doctor being calm is reassuring but no one wants to see blood especially a clot when they are pregnant and my anxious mind is scary.

Re: Subchorionic Hematoma

  • The only time I have bled with a SCH it didn’t end well. It had more to do with the placement of the SCH than anything else. SCH are present in 40% of pregnancies and most of them don’t cause any issues with the pregnancy. I have had 4 SCH after the initial one with my last 3 (including my current) pregnancies. They all healed with no issue. I had zero bleeding though. Just some minor spotting this pregnancy that happened once.

  • With the sch that didn’t end well how far along where you if you don’t mind me asking and also how big. I was told the bleed isn’t on the sac and away from Bub
  • It was 5cm and I’m the center of the placenta. I was close to 14 weeks when I lost that baby.
  • So sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing
  • Thanks. Just remember that most SCH heal with zero issues. I always try to rest as much as possible and I’m always told to be on pelvic rest. I’m not sure what your provider has suggested. Hematomas can grow and shrink fast. So it’s best to take it easy especially since you’re bleeding.
  • Yes I’m resting hoping my bleeding continues to slow down and hope it goes away soon without issue.
  • Update : had my 13 week NT scan and the subchorionic hematoma has gone and everything is well.
  • I am so sorry you are going through this. I also had hematoma during pregnancy. It's actually very common and my pregnancy (now beautiful 2 year old) was very peaceful in spite of it. I understand how stressful it is though! I might suggest joining a pregnancy support group. I recently joined www.getsoulside.com that my OB recommended to me. I meet once a week with other pregnant women and we chat about our major issues and emotions. It's facilitated by an experienced midwife who addresses all my medical concerns in real-time.
