Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Breastfeeding advice

Hey momma's! My name is Taylor and I am a FTM to a 3 month old little boy. He is gaining weight well, has enough dirty and wet diapers during the day. He only feeds from one breast each time and is satisfied. He won't take the other breast even I offer to him. He eats about every 2-3 hrs. To maintain my supply, should I pump my other breast he doesn't feed on every time? Or what are you all doing? I am jrw to this and don't want to feel strapped to a pump if I go out and about. Please let me know!

Re: Breastfeeding advice

  • My baby is almost 2 months and is the same. I just make sure to alternate breasts each time and it's been mostly fine. I have had a bit of an oversupply, which led to engorgement after longer overnight stretches without eating (it could be 6 hours between feeds on a particular breast, since he alternates), so I've had to pump just a bit to relieve the pressure. My lactation consultant did not recommend pumping to me- it'll lead to an oversupply, then you'll end up having to always pump on the opposite side. We're trusting my body to regulate based on baby's demand, which means roughly every 4-6 hours for each breast. Things have already started evening out, and interestingly baby has now started taking both breasts more often. I've started switching sides when he starts showing down rather than waiting for him to pop off, and that's helped, too.

If you haven't connected with a lactation consultant yet, I highly recommend it- such a great resource, personalized care, and I even got home visits weekly for several weeks that were up to an hour and a half each and covered by insurance! It's pretty rare to get that kind of service nowadays, a medical care house call and free!

  • Gosh this is such great advice thank you so much! I too have a slight of over supply. So probably my fault. I'm definitely going to reach out to my local lactation consultant. Didn't even think of that so thank you thank you!!
