Baby Names

Tyr

Making our baby boy list. We like short names. Family names. Or traditional names. We are of norse heritage and are wanting a norse name this time.
This is on the list and I'm undecided. I like it alot but feel it will be mispronounced and misspelled ALL the time.
Tyr is pronounced TEER or like a 😪

Thoughts?

Re: Tyr

  • I thought it was pronounced like Tire, so it would definitely be misspelled, but if having the cultural connection is important I don’t think that after a correction it’s difficult to say correctly. I’m not familiar with Norse names besides the popular ones: Thor, Odin, Leif, etc.

    Other short boys names:
    Theo
    Leo
    Jon
    Max
    Aaron

  • It could go either way with people pronouncing Tear or Tire
  • Interestingly before even clicking into the thread and saw Tyr I actually did pronounce it TEER. Perhaps because my husband is slightly obsessed with all things Scandinavian so the correct pronunciation easily came to mind?

I really like the name! And yeah, he'll probably have to spell it for everyone he doesn't know but people he interacts with often will get it. With the name being short I don't think it will be too bad to have to always respond with "hello, my name is Tyr as in T-Y-R" or something like that. Once it's explained that it's a Norse name people will hopefully be understanding about the spelling!
