Pregnant @ work

Hey guys ! I’m 7 weeks pregnant and I’m wondering when to tell my boss that I’m pregnant. I’ve read after the 1st trimester. But because my pregnancy is considered "high risk" I have to go to the hospital every single week, and so that’s gonna affect work obviously. But I work from home so it’s manageable but I’m wondering if I still should tell my boss. And it’s a woman with 3 kids so she might understand. What about you? When did you tell your boss? How long you waited?

Re: Pregnant @ work

  • This is a great question regarding pregnancy, and one that has been debated for years by many people on how much information should be shared, especially when it comes to the workplace. The truth is, you can’t really generalize that this is an issue only for women or for people in your position. It’s very important to consider.

  • Of course, you should tell her about it, especially since you are often in the hospital. If you do not want to do this, no one will force you.
  • I told my boss right after finding out because we’re pretty close and she’s also go kids. I felt comfortable with my decision because I plan to be open with her about my pregnancy and needs throughout.

If you’d like to wait then I’d simply let your boss know that you have a recurring medical appointment each week. That should be sufficient explanation for anyone.

The decision is completely yours. Telling your boss early may help with some accommodations, but you also don’t have to give a detailed explanation of why you have a recurring medical appointment.

I won’t be telling my boss until I have to because unfortunately she is the type of person who will throw a lot of extra work and projects my way to complete before I leave.

Do what you feel best about. Even if you don’t tell them right now, you can always wait a few weeks until you’re more certain
  • I’m 8 weeks, and I haven’t told my boss yet. I plan to tell him Monday.
  • I’m 12 weeks today and haven’t told anyone at work. Perhaps in a couple weeks. What’s the hurry.
  • @songsboutjane it depends on your job I think. For exemple, overtime work is quite normal and regurlar in my line of work (up to 65h/week), but while pregnant, healthcare recommends not to work over 40h/week in this line of work. These hours will also drop to 35h at 24 weeks.
  • I’m up for a big promotion and I’m 100% certain my boss’s boss will discriminate against me if she knew I had to take a 3 month leave. She’s a spiteful lady.  10wks and still 2 rounds of interviews to go so I don’t think I’m going to be able to hide it until after the job is offered. Crappy because I’m 150% qualified for the job.
  • @aemedina I hope you'll get your promotion!
  • How are you dealing with symptoms? I’m nauseous off and on all day. Everyone eats at their desk and heats up food in the office, which has been rough 🤢 I’m 8 weeks but won’t have my first appointment till Friday! Thinking about telling my boss soon, but very not ready to tell the whole office!
  • @mommameg9 I'm sorry I don't have much advice since I mostly work from home. When I go to the office, I try to nibble on crackers and cookies to manage my nausea and keep a hot cup of ginger tea. I like the smell of ginger tea and it helps to hide other scents while it's close to my nose (when drinking for example).
  • I’ll be 10 weeks tomorrow and have been missing days from work because I’ve been throwing up and feeling nauseous. It’s been difficult working like this. My job is aware of my pregnancy and sometimes they let workers work from home (if they had surgery etc etc) I asked if I can work from home for a few weeks. but they won’t accommodate me. I’m just worried what if I get fired…I’m thinking about calling my doctors office tomorrow to see if she can give me a note. I’m just hoping once I enter the second trimester , my symptoms will go down a bit. But being stressed out at work and trying to work feeling nauseous and throwing up is rough :-/
  • @norma_xxoo I personally would get a doctor’s note (with specific dates) - then they’re refusing what seem like reasonable accommodations, if others are allowed to WFH temporarily…. Do you have short term disability through your work?

  • The doctor wouldn’t write me a note either. She said being nauseous and throwing up is normal. She only writes a note for high risk pregnancies. Smh. I’m not sure if I do have a short term disability at my job. Monday I’m going to have to talk to HR. Ugh lol
