Breastfeeding emotions

This sounds crazy I know, I am trying to get my milk supply in (and failing), but that's not what I'm worried about. When i am hooked up to the pump I get this weird feeling of sadness in my gut, I feel like I want to cry. But as soon as I turn it off the feelings go away. Which is not helping me get motivated to pump. What is this and has anyone else had this issue?

I haven't experienced this, but I know it's a thing! It's actually common enough that there's a name for it D- MER (dysmorphic milk ejection reflex). Here's some info on it: https://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/d-mer/

It may be confirming to hear: "This is a physiological response (not a psychological response) that appears to be tied to a sudden decrease in the brain chemical dopamine immediately before milk let-down". There's nothing wrong with you or weird about it, it's a chemical reaction related to the milk production.

  • Thank you! I'm going to look more into that! I did end up deciding to formula feed instead. The emotions were too much, and I was crying, like ugly crying multiple times a day. Since I've stopped trying to BF I have been in a great mood. It's upsetting that it didn't work out but it's okay 😊
  • Oh good, I'm glad you found something that works for you and baby, and that you're at peace with how it worked out. I'm sure your little one is better off with a happy, present mama. Congrats and good luck!
