When does hyperemesis gravidarum start?

What week of pregnancy does hyperemesis gravidarum typically start? How rare is this condition?

I’m 7.5 weeks pregnant and the nausea is slowly getting worse it seems. I haven’t actually thrown up yet, just nauseous for most of the day.

Scared of getting HG.

Re: When does hyperemesis gravidarum start?

  • Is there a particular reason you are worried about this??? There is a chance your symptoms may not get any worse, or you could have MS then it suddenly stop.  No one can answer this question for you, only time can tell what's going to happen..... Sorry

    Hi there

I'm sorry you're worried about HG and feeling so nauseated. While we all know that the moniker of "morning sickness" is a bit of joke, as you can have pregnancy related nausea and vomiting at anytime of day! Most pregnancy related nausea and vomiting ease by the 12th week on average - there is nothing magical about the start of the 12th week, it's just the average week most "morning sickness" tends to ease up.

Hyperemesis gravidarum is being studied slowly and is thought to have a more genetic component rather than random occurrence. It isn't something you can control, or is something you should anticipate just from having more continuous nausea. If the nausea has impacted your ability to keep down the majority of your food and hydration, you are vomiting uncontrollably whether eating or not, and this impacts your ability to gain weight or stay out of the hospital, or to keep working, that is when you would seek evaluation for HG.

I hope this helps. Wishing you relief and the best.
  • I am sorry that you are feeling sick most of the time.  Please call your drs nurse line to see if they have any advice/medicine that might help you.  My symptoms were never severe enough to be considered HG, but I did lose 16lbs in the first trimester from nausea and vomiting.  My doctor wasn't concerned about the weight loss and was able to give me some medication to help.  I started to feel better around 16 weeks.  In the interim, medication and lots of crackers/ginger ale was the key.
  • I get HG! I threw up 150 times in under 12 hours at week 4. I take four medications around the clock, and get fluid infusions on a regular schedule. This a great graphic that explains the difference.
