1st Trimester

I did something bad…

Really really ashamed of it but my husband and I went out to eat with some good friends at a nice restaurant and they ordered beef tartare. At first I said it was fine because I thought I could resist but it looked soooo good when it came out that I caved and took 2 small bites.. but then instantly regretted after because I started getting anxious over it. I’ve seen online many people who have eaten sushi and beef tartare during their pregnancy and said their baby was fine. I cut out basically everything (sushi, wine, caffeine, etc) but I couldn’t resist the beef tartare! :/ I need some reassurance because this anxiety is killing me.. :((

  • There’s nothing you can do about it now and worrying won’t solve anything. If it bothers you so much, mention it to your doctor, but the odds of getting sick at a nice restaurant is pretty low. If you do feel sick mention it to your doctor.

  • I have never heard of beef tartare. I have never eaten that while pregnant. As for sushi, I had some the other night. Honestly, after reading this thread I may buy some more for dinner tonight. I eat sushi from the same restaurant I always eat sushi from and have never had issues. 
  • The risk of eating raw sushi/fish and especially beef is that the source matters, and often you don't know it. In the case of an up scale restaurant that can even be licensed to serve beef tartare, the source is high quality and they are invested in serving non-contaminated beef! Now, does that remove all the risk? No, but nothing does. Does it bring mitigation into? Yes. And that's where the real equation matters - mitigation. Raw beef is not raw beef is not raw beef - you had a high quality source from am establishment that is certified to serve raw beef - heavy mitigation.
