I was a single parent when I had my daughter and my full-time job paid me practically nothing. So, I applied for WIC. I was embarrassed at the time, but after a little while, I figured 'Hey, that's what it's here for...and this is why I pay taxes." So, I used it for the amount of time that I needed it and I went off of it. I'm not ashamed in the least...and am glad that there was a program in place to help.
I just think a lot of people are seriously misinformed (case in point - when we went grocery shopping). I didn't have a problem with you getting WIC obviously, but I didn't know that was all you got.
(i think it's obvious) but if you FF, you get formula.
when kids are older, you get certain cereals like Kix and stuff. i forget, but i worked at a grocery store in HS, so i checked out a loooot of WIC orders, and i used to have the items memorized.
Oh, and this was 15 years ago, but it's not like I took the checks and did my grocery shopping. I remember buying formula...and when she got a little older, Cheerios, milk and cheese (maybe bananas?). I'm sure there were a few other things, but that that's what comes to mind.
Kate did not get juice at our last appt. She is now 9 months. That's okay..all she eats is booby milk anyway.
If you FF you do get formula.
Amrice - the child actually gets the program from age 1 - 5, not the parent. So your brother can totally apply for his child. It depends on the income level if they will qualify or not.
As for the changes in the program, theya re still working on it and don't have anything set in stone yet. I asked at the last appointment and she said it would likely be a year before the changes took effect...but that is October of 09 so hopefully things go as planned. It will be nice to see more whole foods as options.
(The last time I bought formula, I noticed there were only little WIC tags on the shelf under regular Enfamil and regular Similac, not the sensitive/gentle versions...)

Unless you have a script it is only certain formula.
Also, you can only get cows milk and you can't get organic. If you are sensitive to cows milk or have a religious issue you have to get permission to use soy, rice or goats.

I was unable to BF (major issues) and the only formula that my daughter would tolerate (I tried them all) was Nutramigen. It was covered under WIC. But like I said, this was 15 years ago.
I was on WIC after I had my first twins. We had budgeted in the cost of one baby on a military salary... not two! I only used it for the formula since I didn't actually need help with groceries, just couldn't afford formula for two babies. My oldest daughter was allergic to milk and milk proteins and had to be on nutramigen and we picked it up at the office each month.
I looked at the website and the income qualif for here are really low? I would have to have 12 kids to qualify that doesnt seem right
what are the income qualifications??
Nope, those ARE the income qualifications. It is really low.
And...I get about $100 worth of food each month. I am issued checks/vouchers that have a list of what I can get with each one. We are not talking fancy food here. Staples. That's it. Some protein, some milk, cheese and juice.
I guess I should chime in with a friend of mine who is on the program plus gets insurance through the state plus food stamps plus has daycare 100% paid for
She gets diapers from her 2 babys daddys and toys/clothes etc.
She makes 34k a yr, granted shes single but she lives at home with her mom and pays for literally NOTHING.
She goes on these lavish trips all the time and it frustrates me because I wish I had an extra 2K to do what I wanted to each month. I am her supervisor and dont have that much left over to just "spend on whatever"
In those cases it frustrates me because the government is paying for EVERYTHING when shes paying for nothing. Also I work nights because we really cant afford daycare and the gov is paying for her daycare
in instances like that thats when I find it irriating
But I think its a good program when used correctly.

Don't lump her in with me then. Her situation is rare. And technically...she's lying. You have to claim the income of EVERY adult in the house. If she lives at home she would need to state her parent's income.
Her case is fraud. Families like mine use it to survive through a tough time.
We have our 1st appt with WIC next week... I am a little nervous about what to expect! We were doing fine until I lost my job and then, surprise BFP. With 2 babies on formula and then a 3 and 4 yr old any little bit will help! We don't qualify income-wise for any other assistance though...

First, they will see if you qualify. But the new baby counts towards your household size. That helps. They will likely weigh you and check your iron levels. It's really easy and pretty pain free.
I'm just over here lurking, but I have a question....has that website not been updated? I ask b/c I saw the income requirements ($35K something for a family of 4) and we make more than that, are a family of 3, and qualify for WIC and state insurance (not Medicaid, another program GA has). Or is it different state to state?
I only ask b/c there may be some reading this struggling & wondering if they would qualify, and like I said, for our situation, that's completely off, and yes, our true income was disclosed to both WIC and PeachCare (state insurance).

I don't know but I know that it's not super easy to get it and you can't make a lot of money for it. I also know that if you qualify for one program a lot of times that will automatically qualify you for others.

Yeah, we definitely don't make a lot of money, we are still considered "poverty level".....I bet it does vary by state, maybe based on COL area?
While most States use the maximum guidelines, States may set lower income limit standards. A person or certain family members who participate in other benefits programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families automatically meet the income eligibility requirement.

Re: PSA: What you actually get on WIC
I will also answer any questions that anyone might have on how it works.
Oh...and we get infant cereal for Kate now but she won't eat it. It does however make a great subsitute for breadcrumbs in meatloaf.
Tales of the Wife
in october of this year (i think thats when)
they are adding to the kids, whole fruit and cutting down the juice and tofu, bread and some other things i can't remember

Is it only certain kinds of formula?

when i was pg i got, eggs, juice, milk, cereal, and peanut butter or beans
DD gets formula, juice, and cereal right now

I see I am totally for WIC when people like yourself, hippy and other mature/responsible people use it.
However, I do find it irritating when I say man formula is expensive and someone chimes in from work why dont you get on wic.

Those people need to be educated. You can't just "get" on WIC that easy.
