Re: Product Spotlight: Baby Carriers

  • Favorite baby carrier (brand &/or type): Happy Baby carrier (OG)
    Link/picture: https://happybabycarriers.com/products/original-baby-carrier
Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): Looks like they're around $150ish
What you like about it: Comfortable to wear and so easy to put on. My daughter was always comfortable in it too.
What you don't like about it, if anything: It's not the best for the newborn stage, but lots of people still use it for NBs. I like a wrap (Solly) when they're tiny.
Is there a baby carrier you don't have but are considering? Why?: No, I'm good with what I have.
Additional thoughts on baby carriers: I have two Lillebaby carriers (one is more structured and good for like hiking and the other is similar to the Happy Baby in style). I also tried a ring sling and hated the way it felt. It's all really personal though. I would try to go to a store where you can try them out or borrow a friends.

  • When I had my DS pretty much the only good carriers available I think were the ergo and the Tula and I think maybe the lilebaby was getting popular too. But back then it was “new” to baby wear. Those were all out of my price range so the only ones I had tried were the infantino ones and they were awful.

recently my neighbor lent me some wraps to try with the baby I was watching and she gave me two options, the soli(?) wrap and a boppy wrap/carrier combo. Wasn’t a huge fan of the boppy one but I did like the wrap a lot so I’ll be registering for that, well the moby because it’s cheaper, the Moby is like $40.

I also will be registering for the lilebaby 6-in-1 because it has the option to be mesh back which will be cooler in since it’s summer. Haven’t tried it before though. That one I think is $99
  • I have several carriers. I have a Happy Baby Carrier, Tula, Ergo 360, and some newborn soft wraps. I just recently got a kangaroo carrier sling that I love. It’s great for my toddler when he wants to be held but I need my hands.

Ergo 360 great for older babies and toddlers. It’s the carrier I reach for to go on long hikes. Very supportive and super comfy for me and baby.

Tula is great for 3 -7 months because I have found it less supportive. I do like it enough to reach for it often. Once they get heavier it’s just not as supportive. Although, I have found it more supportive than my happy baby carrier.

Happy baby carrier is super stylish. It’s linen and very pretty. They can be pricey and I bought I cheaper one because I didn’t want to spend over $200. I wear it for short grocery shopping or shopping around town. Definitely not a trail carrier because I wouldn’t want it to get ruined.

I’ll probably buy a new Tula because I have a boring grey one.
    • Favorite baby carrier (brand &/or type) ergo
    • Link/picture: https://ergobaby.com/?product-finder=open#
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): I spent ~$40, used. New ones range $70-$200+ it looks like
    • What you like about it: size is adjustable, baby felt secure, can buy inserts for newborn age, last through multiple babies, can wear on front or back
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: mine slid a bit and I’d have to adjust while wearing, but it wasn’t a deal breaker
    • Is there a baby carrier you don't have but are considering? Why?: no, probably going to find another ergo
    • Additional thoughts on baby carriers: We also bought SO a ktan carrier, but he never used it, he’d just use the ergo. Someone gave me a solly wrap, but it was confusing to figure out, and we borrowed a friends structured hiking pack but also never used it.
Another thing about carriers, I didn’t buy a stroller before my son was born because I knew I wanted to baby wear. After he was born, it was too hard on me to walk far at all with his added weight while recovering from a tear. We quickly ordered a stroller.
  • I didn’t do a ton of baby wearing with DD. I had a boba(?) wrap that we used occasionally but I plan to do a lot more baby wearing this time around. A lot of moms from my Feb18 group swear by the Tula. I think that’s the way I want to go with this baby.
  • My daughters 8 I had a moby wrap which I loved but hated so I might try it again. And I had a toddler Lillie baby Cary on which I feel like I waisted money on as she never loved it by the time she was in it

I have been given an ergo for this baby which I have heard great things about
  • I had a Solly wrap and a Tula carrier with my first (Marit). I thought we were done so I gave my Tula away. I will definitely be replacing it asap. Grateful I kept the Solly. Also just saw that Tula makes baby doll carriers for little so thinking I’ll get Marit one for her birthday before her little sister gets here.

Solly was around $60 and I scored the Tula used from a friend for $100. Looks like Tula is running a sale this month.
  • I inherited a few, plus then bought a couple last time around...

    Wraps
-Ktan -- I liked this one, especially in the early weeks. I got the Active one so it's more of a mesh than a thick cotton and it's way more comfortable. (I was actually given a regular one too, but immediately gave it away to someone else, the Active was so much more comfortable.)
-Solly -- bit of a learning curve but really soft, and I liked that my husband could use it too
-Boppy ssc/wrap combo -- easier to pop on than the Solly and felt more stable when she was older, but not quite as comfortable. I mostly used it at home when she was in the 5-8 month range.
-Ring sling -- I got a cheap mesh one on Amazon for the pool/beach and that was SO HELPFUL when holding a slippery kid

    Structured
-Bjorn -- not my favorite, but it was the original one that's been improved on in new models I think. I probably only used it once.
-Infantino -- cheap and feels like it but works in a pinch. My husband loves it though.
-Lillebaby -- I actually bought this one new but returned it. If you have a short torso, AVOID. I'm 5'3 and my daughter was practically back in the womb in this, she was dangling so low, and we both hated it. I'm sure it works fine for taller folks but didn't for me AT ALL.
-Ergo -- my absolute favorite. Got it used for $49 before a Disney World trip when she was 8 months old and it was CLUTCH, and so comfortable and easy to use. I used it until she was about 17 months and then she started walking and didn't want to be worn anymore. The only thing I didn't love was that it was pretty thick fabric and gets hot, but oh well. We actually now have a doll Ergo that she wears her babies in, which is adorable.

    • Favorite baby carrier (brand &/or type)Baby Bjorn Carrier Free
    • Link/picture:
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): $175
    • What you like about it: ok I went through so many trials with carriers. I am very petite and my waist is oddly narrow so Lillebaby and Ergobaby wouldn’t get tight enough for baby to be safe. So baby bjorn is the only brand I found for structured that actually tightens enough for baby to be safe. I also like that it’s easy to adjust the size between parents and doesn’t take ages to adjust like the Infantino did (which honestly I did like pretty well)
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: It doesn’t have a sun cover which I really wanted. It’s super expensive.
    • Is there a baby carrier you don't have but are considering? Why?: I want to get more into wraps this time. I didn’t baby wear during the newborn stage nearly enough and it’s because I had a Moby and we couldn’t figure it out. I think I’ll go for the Solly this time for newborn.
    • Additional thoughts on baby carriers: my old town had a baby carrier meetup. You could try on lots of different ones. I recommend finding a way to do this because I really think the best baby carrier is going to be unique to your body and you won’t know what works until you try.
  • @ccmrc143 Solly makes a petite wrap so you don’t end up with a ridiculous amount of extra fabric.

I am not petite so needed the regular wrap but I loved it so much.
