Product Spotlight: Intangibles

Each week we'll spotlight a new category of product. Feel free to comment on threads like these throughout your time at the board, not just when they're in their week in the spotlight, if you discover something new OR are new to the board. This week it's.... Intangibles!

Some products can't be bought--and some experiences sh/could be that would be greatly helpful to a PG person/new mom. Here are some helpful prompts to get us started!

Re: Product Spotlight: Intangibles

  • Stocking up on freezer meals was a huge help to us both times. I’m starting even earlier and hitting it hard because I’ll have two kids who talk this time and not just a baby and nonverbal toddler. I froze my first meal last night! Will probably keep meal delivery through Home Chef as well so we have easy meals my husband can cook while I’m nap/breastfeeding trapped.

I plan on getting carpets and my tile deep cleaned before baby. Did this before my son and recommend 10/10.

This time around I’m going to hire someone/service to do deep cleaning before baby comes so I don’t have to worry about windowsills, baseboards, etc. for a while.

I’m going for a massage and pedicure next weekend. Will get a redo pedicure around 38 weeks or so to refresh.

  • Freezer meals were a lifesaver for us last time. Not the kind where everything ends up in a zip lock and you still have to pull out the instant pot to cook it, but true freezer meals. The kind you just put in the oven for an hour. Pair with a side of microwaveable frozen veggies or quick salad. I also added extra $$ to the takeout budget which helped us feel less guilty about eating out when we just needed to not cook due to time or sanity.

This time around, I plan to rely more on services. Like @Wishilivedinflorida, I plan to use a cleaning service right before baby comes. It was one of those "not really necessary" expenses that we scaled back on this past year, but worth it during the struggle of the newborn phase.

I also plan to budget for the occasional grocery pickup from the Safeway by our house. We normally shop at the commissary on the Navy base because food is SO MUCH cheaper there, but it's also a 20 min drive and they don't offer grocery pickup. There's also a Walmart 1 block down from us and I've heard good things about their grocery pickup.

My daughter is already in preschool, but if she wasn't, we would also look at something like part-time daycare just so she has something that is "hers" and to get her out of the house and separate the kiddos for a little bit.
  • Freezer meals helped a lot.

I have my daughter in daycare full time right now while working but we'll be switching her to 3 days/week starting in May.
  • I used to clean houses back when I was in college and a for a bit after my husband lost his job in 2020 and I’m struggling with the idea of hiring someone to clean my house for some reason. But I also want it desperately. 😅 Is it worth it? Am I being silly?

Also, made double batches of dinner this week and froze them along with some waffles this morning. I’m feeling pretty good about the freezer prep but also our freezer already feels full!
