Spitting up after a feeding

My newborn (3 weeks) spits up or gets hiccups after each feeding (breastfeed) if laid down on the back after a feeding. I have to hold her for at least 20 min vertically to avoid that.
Does anybody have to deal with that? And how? What can be a reason for that? Too much air while eating?

Re: Spitting up after a feeding

  • My doctor said that it's completely normal for a newborn to have spit-up because the esophageal sphincter isn't yet fully matured and it will resolve on its own. Of course, you should always speak with your pediatrician if you have any concerns.
  • This is incredibly common! Just over half of babies spit up like this from what I’ve read. We also have to hold our newborn up a bit after feeding. As long as your baby doesn’t appear to be in pain or uncomfortable when they spit up, it’s totally normal and something they’ll eventually grow out of 😊

  • yuuuuup. In the early days I was up for 45min to an hour for MOTN feedings because just burping him wasn't enough.
